Does windshield need replacing when repainting roof Sign In

Wanted to get some insight from people who are familiar with how bodyshops and auto dealers work. My situation is that my windshield got replaced with a non-oem windshield when my car got the roof repainted by the dealer. Originally i had an oem windshield. Do they owe me a oem windshield instead of the non-oem one that they gave me. So heres the situation. This is a 2014 acura mdx. It is out of warranty except that roof paint has a special extended warranty by acura due to known issues of peeling paint. My car had this issue so i took it in to get fixed by the dealer to repaint the roof. After they finished the work the service director said my windshield had some minor delamination (a few little small bubbles appearing at the very edge of the windshield). The bodyshop found it after they had already sanded my roof. Not sure what the reason was exactly but the dealer decided to replace the window with a non-oem windshield. The delamination would normally not be covered because my car is out of warranty, but they did it anyways and are covering it out of their pocket for the non-oem windshield. My questions are would the appearance of a few bubbles at the edge of the windshield have any impact on the work that they would need to do? Do they need to remove the windshield to do the work? If so can a delaminating windshield be taken off and put back on? So should i take this as, great they are doing me a favor since they replaced my windshield for me even though it is not oem. Or they are doing warranty work for me and if they are going to switch my windshield as part of that warranty work then they should replace with a genuine acura windshield even though the windshield itself is out of warranty. Another way to look at it is if the paint warranty would sort of extend to the windshield since it is necessary for them to replace the windshield to complete the paint warranty work.

Quote from your post "> windshield had some minor delamination (a few little small bubbles appearing at the very edge of the windshield <"

That's a reason alone to toss that windshield for new OEM or not as it's failing and will be the problem. I personally don't like non OE glass which is a trade of its own is lots cheaper than OE is at your request if that happened while you owned it to insist AND if insurance paid for it there wasn't any fine print to say the cheapest that's legal "cloned" glass has a chance to be same or better I find it inferior and less likely to fit well those edges showing "delamination" probably didn't seal in right or flawed from new?

Is it part of roof work to mess with your windshield? Strong guess is NO,

If they had to do any roof repairs anywhere near the windshield, then yes the windshield would have to be removed.

My guess is they broke the windshield when removing it and replaced it in the least expensive way.

After rereading my post i might have not been clear. When i went in to the dealer to get my roof paint fixed my windshield was original. But during the course of the bodyshops work they found that my original windshield had some delamination. After the fact, they showed me pictures and it looked minor. But what happened is that without ever consulting me the dealer decided it was ok for the bodyshop to replace the glass with a non-oem glass. Does this sound right to you? The paint fixing was covered under acura warranty but the window is out of warranty. If they are going to replace my window without asking me shouldnt the dealer replace it with the same window in this case? Or are they justified in using a non-oem part since they are doing it supposedly out of their own goodwill. Thank!

I was perfectly clear on your question.

My opinion was that the delamination was merely an excuse to cover a mistake they may have made while removing the windshield to do the roof repair. I believe they damaged the original windshield. Did you see that part after it was removed? Did it have any cracks?

Hi Hammer time. I kinda agree with you too but don’t know for sure. And they deny ever breaking the window. They didnt show me any after pictures. But they did show me a picture of the window which was taken after they had sanded the roof. That picture does show some small bubbles. Im starting to think that i am only in this situation because my acura had defective paint. I only had this work done to get it remedied through my warranty. Otherwise i would be driving my mdx with no issues except for may some very minor delamination which nobody had ever noticed. So why should i end up with a non-oem windshield in this case. Does this sound reasonable. Does their point of view that the window has issues in the first place matter?

I think you're probably making too much of this aftermarket part business. They are commonly used throughout the repair industry and are usually required in insurance claims.

I'll admit that they are likely lower quality than the OEM versions but I don't think you have basis to demand the OEM replacement. You already admitted they weren't required to give you one in the first place and as I said, I think they were forced to replace it due to damage.
