Hi all, I have recently acquired a 2010 Toyota Prius. 75K miles so it's barely broken in ha ha. One owner and I know that he stored the car in a garage and the vehicle was very well maintained. The exterior is very clean except for some rust bubbling on the bottom edge of the hatchback door. Take a look at the two reference photos I've provided. What is the best way to nip this rusting process in the bud? Thanks. Dennis

drp: Not a pro but have a clue also do some respectable hack stuff. #1. !! Is that metal IRON/STEEL or what? I don't see typical "rust" could change the deal. Use a plain magnet - check that. OK: So far I think that grew from a nick whatever metal. No paint will really match so your call and AYOR if you did want to pay for a whole hatch paint job some tricks could make it harder later. I'd use a small scraper like for gaskets or smaller and get all that loose off till clear as close as you can leaving good paint alone. Now would when plenty of dry time use by brand, "Loctite" says Extend, Rust Neutralizer on plastic bottle is water based like a milk. Dang stuff works! Wait on steel rust it turns black when dry wants some rust. If not rusted a syrup look but dry is a good primer says it should have paint or something over it. Then, touch up just that spot wits close color. Stop there done or could pin stripe (fat stripe) with good Scotch 22 or 77 electrical tape last years! It will remove if you hate that comes in at least 3 colors. Real rust or corroded you should do something if you want it would always be suggested to have an in person inspection by a pro body shop ideas or costs your call, T

Hi @Tom Greenleaf, Thanks for the input. That's a good question about what material the hatchback is made of. Never thought of that. I'll look into it. Dennis

Metal can corrode steel or others. Alloys sure rust/corrode rims to tires leak like crazy where I am. Check out the stuff. Trick to it is don't touch the container to anything meaning use a small cup not brush or Q-Tip out of container to contaminate it. It will work on aluminum or alloy or does for me is a great primer for hand painted touch ups but no moisture dry time a must, T Other > Pls remove your link at sign off by site rules that should be allowed I wont will let you, OK?

Looks like aluminum to me. PS, please reduce the size of your photos by at least half. They are messing up this thread. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
