Hello, I have been having a problem with my brakes after start up. When I apply pressure, the pedal will lock up only after a few centimeters and make a sound as if there was air leaking. This eventually goes away after I pump the breaks a few times. It has been very cold in my area this winter (below freezing) and I believe this may be the cause, but I honestly don't know much about cars. My Initial thought was that after the car warms up the problem would dissipate, but today after about 5-10 min driving the brakes locked up. For obvious reasons I am afraid to drive the car for the fear my breaks might lock up. Does anyone have an idea before I take it to a mechanic? 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier 2.4L about 120K miles Check engine light not on Thanks for reading!

It sounds like you are having a problem with the brake booster. I would have it checked by a professional to confirm. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Ditto - Let the pros have it since it's brakes and scares you now is enough. Chances are as HT said a problem with brake booster/power assist and a total failure you usually would need both feet and a hand full force for only fair braking rather than locking up wheels. You said cold. If it started it wasn't too cold for car parts to work properly but brings out weak stuff, T
