2002 Monte Carlo brake pads wearing unevenly Sign In

Car has 82K miles. Took both wheels off and found the inner brake pad of both front wheels is wearing unevenly, basically a band of excess wear on the outer edge, corresponding to a band of rust on the inner face of the rotor. The outer pads, and the outer face of the rotor, on both sides looks fine.

At first I thought this meant the inner pad wasn't contacting the rotor at the outer edge, allowing the corresponding area of the rotor to rust, but it seemed to me then that the outer edge of the brake pad should have LESS wear, not more.

So is the rusty band on the rotor the initial problem? I don't know why it would be rusting unless it were not being contacted by the pad, but if that were the case, shouldn't the pad be thicker in that area, not thinner?

Thanks.

Unsure so far as you would need to remove the pads for full inspection AND lube the caliper. That rust on outer ring can be normal - not all pads will rub on total surface of rotor and if not removed for a subsequent set it can wear into the pad or not.
Your call if pads look good with them off to have that rust ring removed about means turning rotors which apparently were not last round and not lubing caliper puts more work on inside pad as piston pushes those first. Do you want to do a full brake job now and be over this? I can't tell how bad inside pads really are and you really can't if the rust is excessive without lifting off caliper and a real look.

Just know all brake parts makers are not exact but should all be legal. Cheaper can be lousy or OK.

Other is I really suggest tossing rotors not turning them in rust prone areas. They might be legal but rust even faster on the rusted spots and might get only half the life of doing it with new,

If it's rust on the rotor that you are looking at, you likely just have salt exposed rotors. Of course you are going to lube and free up everything in the process of replacing the pads and rotors but i think you just have an issue with salt exposure to the rotors. That's a pretty normal pattern for the rust to appear.
