2014 Ford focus. 1l engine, 89000 miles.

We just had our MOT done on Saturday 3/10/20. Among other things the front brake pads needed replacing. Ever since the car was returned to us (they collected and returned it) it has been squeaking whenever we brake. We took it back and they said the advisory notice had said that the discs were right on the verge of needing replacing too, which they hadn't told us when they were doing the work or we would have had it done, and it is squeaking because the discs are warped. They want an extra £144 to do the brake discs. Does this seem like a fair deal? Also another issue, we asked a halfords garage what they would charge and they said that they would never replace just the discs and would have to put a new set of pads on too even though they are only a week old. Is it dangerous to replace just the discs when the pads are a week old?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Halford's Garage is correct just BTW - no cutting corners for pro work.
The real deal is if rotors were lousy AND not enough metal thickness to machine them (most wouldn't) you just don't put pads on and call it a "brake job" so there's a reason to squeak.

Other reason is type of pad you can get silent pads just will not squeak even with a lurking issue. Some brands just are noisy there's just nothing to do but get rid of those for another or improved brand.

Now just some questions about actually warped rotors: Do then "shake" when braking now and right away back in March? They were warped then another reason to have tossed them then.

Your pricing (adjusted for converted that this site is US based have a clue though) is OK not the style for doing this work.
They can be quiet and right plus now by request if applicable dust free not mess up see thru wheels if the type used.
Sorry to say it's legalish to do what they did it's just not very professional probably commensurate with the costs you paid and quote given just now. Bargain shopping for brakes isn't really a great idea you will just get the lowest grade and NOW YOU ARE PAYING FOR IT,

If they just slapped pads on without doing anything to the rotors, then they didn't do a brake job and it's not surprising that it squeals.

If pads are not replaced, they should at least be machined to create a new surface, assuming they are thick enough to do that.

These days it's usually about the same price to replace as to machine so that's the way most go.

Thanks for the help both of you. Sorry I didn't realise this was an American based forum, I was in a rush and this was the first site that looked helpful amongst a sea of Google ads. The date of the initial repair would have been 10/3/2020 for you guys i guess, the third of this month, different date format in the UK and all that. The information provided helped us to understand what was wrong with the car and what they had done wrong. We got them to fix the discs and put fresh pads on for free (I suspect we still overpaid a little but we needed it done and it was cheaper than getting another place to do both). The noise has stopped now. They actually weren't all that cheap relative to everyone else and had good reviews, but in future we will just stick to somewhere we trust even if its a little more. Thanks again
