93 Dodge Caravan master cylinder Sign In

I have a 93 Caravan with the integrated master and booster with a separate ABS pump. The new Master unit is over $3,000 and the ABS pump is no longer available. I want to know if it's possible to convert it over to a normal vacuum power booster master cylinder setup. The van only has 40,000 miles on it so I don't want to get rid of it. I don't care about ABS working or not.

I don't know what you are talking about. That should have a normal vacuum booster.

OMG - Just looked for some of this stuff - is or near obsolete. Napa showed this monster mess for $459.99 said to check for availability so maybe not?

Looked like this is this shows?

So, no doubt you have a rare bird and if totally unavailable or the price you mentioned is all you could find after I was revived from passing out at this monster which still might not be right time to think hard.

Understood you probably could legally dump this for everything involved for a non ABS/Hydroboosted braking system.

I'm still gasping for air! Guess if this is you problem at all (you didn't say why you needed it) I'd be hunting down an entire vehicle junked that was without and might try to obtain every last part that was more common if it took right down to the rubber on the brake pedal.

Never saw this no wonder either. How hard do you want to work on this? I just can't know what or where needed things are like called "proportioning" valve idea how and where that's done?

IDK if literally your current brake pedal and hardware, push rod and all would also be different?

Yikes - I wouldn't recommend this much or this involved as a mistake or bad other associated parts may be needed as well.

There's no negotiating the end fix has to be totally correct and operational in every way perfect as if it wasn't the original system at all but correct for the exact model you have.

Best I can suggest as personally for a 1993 wouldn't go thru all that greatly because I'm not sure how involved or legal all that would be if attempted at all.

This stinks!

HT - That showed out of over 6,000+ possible set ups! What on earth is that thing? No wonder if true. Says NAPA on the picture of it apparently no vacuum booster for that???????????????

Never saw that as said,

Re: 93 Dodge Caravan master cylinder Sign In

That is not a brake booster. That is just a master with a pressurized accumulator for ABS.

I'm afraid he is screwed. He has to find another one of those.

Pic again>

That one if that one? Look - the master has the rod right to the brake arm inside - no booster? That's some probably power steering thing out of this picture and additional? Info stunk on this set up.

All fine but what to do that's legal and safe if this is a totally obsolete set up costly or not?

OP didn't say what the problem was that makes it need this at all or what. A 93 anything could be wrong and just blame this mess?

Re: 93 Dodge Caravan master cylinder Sign In

The unit looks similar to what is pictured. First the ABS pump would occasionally growl at me and then it turned into a constant growl with eventual failure. About two weeks later I lost pedal. I would post a picture but for some reason I can't get my phone to transfer the picture from the hosting site to the Post. What I wanted to know is if the bolt pattern on the firewall would be the same as an older Caravan that used the vacuum power booster. I would assume calipers proportioning valve excetera would be the same

Re: 93 Dodge Caravan master cylinder Sign In

Try a hosting site for pics if needed and a link to your pic or copy/paste it if it will.

OK - There are four bolts to firewall and yours if like the picture back a few uses two? Now - Can't know if there's a plate added, welded something or what but chances are wouldn't bolt right up.

Pic of one booster for this...........

Now another issue is these show they come with the pushrod to the pivot metal inside that usually is NOT adjustable.

Another pic showing that......

It's possible to really get in trouble that you can make that the right distance which matters totally.

Then there's making up new brake lines unless somehow they come close and should be a coil of line right there but needs that.

Can't know all the snags or what could stop you without some serious thought and right stuff.

I'd want parts off a wreck if just for sizing and whatever differences there may be, pedal, push rods and where a proportioning valve meant for this now vs one without this type?

Can't fake this. It's brakes and they have to work as intended for the vehicle and it's weight rating.

There's so much unknown how yours differs from the common stuff out there I just can't know all details to make it right and whether even firewall if welding needed just adds to this nightmare.

Can you find just the master for this which is cheap and may be the same as another without this set up?

One thing is sure - it's trouble to change totally in many ways,

No the hydraulics are all different. I don't know what you are talking about with the booster. You already have a vacuum booster. That part is the master cylinder only. It has nothing to do with boosting brakes. It is ABS only.

Re: 93 Dodge Caravan master cylinder Sign In

Ooops! Was thinking this was "hydro-boosted" downstream somehow. NO - so the item now back several said CALL to find that entire unit and match it up. That wasn't any $3,000 bucks but still $500+ listed.

Jeez - this is rare enough if someone has one bet they want to get rid of it so barter even if a chain outlet,
