Am I being scammed?

Hi there. I have a 2009 Santa fe se This weekend I got into my car and was unable to shift from park to drive. The shifter was stuck. I had to use the unlock button thingy next to the shifter to unlock it. I'm new to this town so I don't have a mechanic yet. So I took it to the closet one to me. They told me my back breaks needs to be replaced and it's about 600$ for breaks and routers and it will fix the issue.. . How ever this does not make sense to me and the explanation they provided didn't add up. So I did my own research and can't find any link between breaks and unable to shift. From what I understand it can be as simple as a fuse or a break sensors or even the cable has dried mud on it.... we're they full of it and scammed me?

The connection of "brakes" and their parts to being able to shift is sensing you are pushing the brake pedal usually sensing the brake lights. It makes no sense how worn brake parts are at all to me either as you don't have to be moving at all nor engine even running to shift a car for some other reason. Eeek! Already have a quote to fix and replace parts that may need doing but about can't be the root cause of you shifting locked. Perhaps find another shop for at least a second opinion or the fix totally, T

Yeah I thought so too. But the wife okayed the repair. What I'm thinking is a fuse was blown or something simple and they wanted more money.. I'm just happy I'm not the only one who thinks it's fishy Thanks for the reply.

Simple check by you: See if brake lights work? If not it won't shift. Other work as said may be needed but won't fix it so shop will find out the other items were NOT the up front problem you are complaining about! T

Run away from those guys. They are selling you what they feel like selling, not what you need. You have an electrical problem with the Shift Interlock. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Yeah, Not going by there. I'm a computer technician and people do the same in my field. i hate when people take advantage when someone does not know Better. Is there anyway to test Electrical Shift interlock system thingy? If this helps, A few months ago Our car would not turn over. Due to the Key not being recognized. The Key logo would not come on the dash, When it does not the car would not start. Think its some kind of anti theft thing.. We took the truck to hyundai who said they will need to change the alternator which is a much more likely cause. but it was covered due to a oil gasket that was recalled which caused damage to the alternator. (or something, If that makes sense) Issue still present just not as bad.

If you're a computer technician, you should know how to use a wiring diagram. Here's the location of the module ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
