So I helped my parents fix some things (New pads, wheel bearing, hub, cv axle passenger side) on their 99 Toyota Corolla. They then took it to a "trusted" longtime mechanic for an alignment. Well they told him go ahead and do anything else that could be needed. It took a while because he said the hub snap ring popped out of place and not sitting properly so he was waiting on a new snap ring. Well when they picked up the car the bill was for the alignment, labor, etc but also included new hub assembly, New bearings, new brake pads, as well as new rotors (prob needed em, but also a resurfacing or waiting until next change would be ok as well in my opinion) anyhow apparently when questioned he said the snap ring not in place caused the bearings to come out which then ruined the hub. My question is this. The vehicle was only driven maybe 20 miles (not far but of course I know even a mile can cause certain damage) so even if the snap ring popped out of place how likely is it that the bearings and hub would be damaged beyond use. I trust the mechanic but also this just seems fishy. Any insight would be appreciated. I don't mind if I made a mistake in repairs but I'd like to learn from it if so. Thanks.

Yep, seems a little fishy to me too. I don't believe that bearing or hub got ruined in 20 miles. You parents made the biggest mistake they could by giving him a blank check to fix things without prior approval and he took advantage of that. I also thought it was odd how he said it caused the balls (bearing) to fall out. I assumed he meant the bearing slid out and it was just lost in translation (my dad picked the car up and relayed the info). But with how much fun I have had removing bearings it seems unlikely they'd come out that easily, and if it really was the "balls" then I'd really love to know how that happened. I asked my dad if he got the damaged parts back which of course he didn't as I don't think that's standard but I'd think a mechanic would save the parts long enough to show the customer the damage especially if it was obviously a new part that was destroyed that fast.

Thanks for your quick response. Wouldn't the bearings falling out cause the car to be undrivable, and in the least cause it to have very noticeable sounds (grinding, crunching etc) that would alert you to something obviously wrong?

I don't think there is any way that it lost any balls. It's not even possible if the axle nut was tight. Your post is a little confusing.........It looks like you changed all those parts yourself (brks, bearing & hub, axle)??? And then the shop changed all that stuff again??? That does sound a bit off... I would definitely need to hear the other side... I don't know you or what kind of job was done.....Going off the worst case....If a car came in where bearing looked like it was beat in with a hammer and the brks were jacked up......Anything that could possibly comeback on me for warranty work, would get replaced...i.e,,, bearing going out......brks squeeking...etc... But I would be crystal clear with the customer as far as letting them know there were new parts installed just not right.... Some shops don't like getting involved in "finishing" work a customer has started......In this day and age....If something goes wrong....it's always the shops fault....It's a fight that has becomes so common that either they won't do any work....or just replace anything that they are going to have to warranty down the road....

Thanks for your response. Yes I did the brakes, bearing, hub, axle. The car needed an alignment which I'm not able to do so told my parents to go ahead and have it done there. It's a little odd to me that the snap ring even dislodged, I was fairly certain I had it placed properly which should eliminate most possibilities of it coming off. But I don't like to assume I'm correct all the time. I understand a shop not wanting to take on that liability which very possibly could factor in on why he did what he did. I plan on going in and having a chat with him to find out exactly what his reasoning is. Just didn't want to go in day after a holiday to bug him so I figured I'd seek some advice from those with more experience with this. I do trust the mechanic, but I've had a few questionable situations over the past with things he's done, guess I'm getting old enough to try and learn from my mistakes than to be naive about things. I really appreciate the responses and an open to any other thoughts anyone has. I'll also update with what I find out once I've spoken with him.

Those rings can be a pain some times....I press those bearing in and seat them with around 3000lbs and even then, sometimes when I put the ring back in i can see it didn't seat all the way & have to "help" it all the way in with a hammer and screw driver... I don't usually put old parts in a customers car unless they ask for them before hand...Believe it or not, more people get upset at have old parts put in their cars...I usually put them aside and trash them the next day....if you throw them away while you are working on the car...Then the cust wants them and your digging in a trash can (happens every time)... You should go talk to him...I would be curious to hear his side....If I had to guess....I would say he say something with the bearing he didn't like....Saw contamination on the pads ( grease, dirt, etc...Anything of the friction area and the pad will make noise...sooner or later) and the rotors were at or below machine to specs...
