Hey guys was hoping you could help me out with something, the other day my e brake light came on for no reason but shut off in a few minutes, then the next day I'm half way to work and I hit a bump and hear a loud clank and now grinding coming from my rear tire, I thought it was my rear driver side tire but I'm not sure so I popped the tire off and was looking and I noticed that my passenger side tires emergency brake cable has tension and my drivers side had no tension, the e brake is off but I am in park, I wasn't sure if that was the main source of my problem or if something else in my wheel is grinding away on each other, the rotor has no noticeable grooves in it, any help will be appreciated as I need to fix this asap

Found out what the problem was, but still the thing with the e brake is going on how one has tension and one doesn't

Year, Make, Model vehicle? Cable actuated anything the cables freeze up to stay on. You'll get a warning light that it's not fully off usually the same light as other brake issues on many vehicles but need to know what this one is, T

OK - Parking brake -broke no doubt and frozen cables possible. It shows the famous mini drum brake you can't see inside the rotor you must remove the bracket and caliper to see it inside. It's a static brake not really meant for friction while moving and because of that rusts up, out of your site. Itself it wont show anything on the disc part of the rotor it's all inside and probably a mess of broken springs and hardware. You'll have to do some looking at this to know how much you'll need to fix it. Are you up to this if it needs cables, and know how to adjust it? In essence it's a real drum brake for the "e-brake" just no hydraulics, just cable actuated and springs to release. Dirt and rust easily can build up inside and wreck them - all parts available but might have trashed what are good looking rotors for the service brake and they are one unit. So try to take a look. Hub of rotor may (probably) be very stuck to hub of axle and will be its own pest to remove. Without writing a whole book on this take a look and see if you want to take it on or not. If you get inside you should be able to at least get all the debris out and broken things out of the way maybe so you can drive it at all as it could jam all up and lock a wheel. Whether you use "e-brake" or not very much you CAN'T ignore it. It will disable the vehicle as it's about to now and any more driving is just making it worse. Strong guess it will need ever part of the entire system including the rotor and possible cables? T

I took apart my rear driver side wheel, I Toole the calaber and rotor off and the whole brake assembly behi d was torn apart and had pieces of metal jammed in different place causeing the loud shearing noise, so yes I'm going too replace it myself this weekend, I have never done anything with the brake assembly before but I'd like to learn and fix it myself, the rotors look decent there is no sign of a chunk of it gone or any grooves,, but this is all on my drivers side where the cable is working fine it had no tension then when I engaged the e brake it got tension, the other side is where the cable has tension all the time

Notes + ideas to help: Cables PULL from a pedal and can only retract by a spring's power so know that works. Expected the mess you found. Not really hard for a tech at all but first of things is learning and takes some paying attention and time. Do this, search out parts. Shoes, hardware and rotor. May not need rotor as said it's a "Static" brake. That means it isn't a friction item in motion unless it was dragging or done on purpose or by mistake. So how true or grooves don't mean as much. If a serious rust ring so you can't put it back on retract how it's adjusted to minimum it would go. You usually can knock off rust rings if so with a hammer at an angle. Adjust as by what you see. DO NOT ADJUST THE PARKING BRAKE CABLE! That's where you set it once not adjust this type! Know that! Lube parts with brake compatible lube - the adjusters with threads (probably) undo the thing and lube it up. Clips or springs might be for left or right side - IDK every set up. Just do one side at a time but do both. If one failed the other will. It's only semi OK if a emergency/parking brake doesn't work unless it locks up, if you park on a hill at all and suggested it be used each time you shut down a vehicle and leave it but most don't. Look for parts in stock, images in a search engine will show what it should look like when together. Some tools requires I don't think anything you shouldn't have if equipped for most things already. Good luck. Have to go but hit back and I'll help finish this when or if it doesn't hold the vehicle still when in use working with new parts as needed and adjusted properly. That may not work right away so let me/us know, there are ways to make that work, Tom

Thanks for the I formation and help, I ended up taking the e brake out Because I don't ever use it and don't have hills that I park on and I just didn't want either side to block up or break again, everything is back together and it drives fine don't hear and grinding or anything, again thanks for the help and everything can always count on you guys

I hear you and don't use that brake where I am anywhere myself and should. Counting on just trans in Park really shouldn't be suggested and isn't. Where I am it must work and hold properly for annual inspection or technically you can't drive that vehicle on public roads. It's legal NOT to use it just not suggested. I must say I think you really should fix it to work properly. You are aware that if your driveshaft loses a u-joint the truck will roll in park with just a push or roll away on its own so it really is a needed thing legal issue or not, T
