Front tire disk getting too hot after brake pad change Sign In

Hello, from Costa Rica. It isn't the first time I've replaced brake pads on my cars, but it is the first time on this Mazda MPV 1994, automatic shift. After changing the front pads I started to hear a buzz sound that increased with the time, also smells like burnt rubber. Last time I drove the car I noticed the right front rim (or drum) was very hot to the touch, not the left one. I took down the tire and noticed that I couln't turn the drum using my hands, I could do it to the front left drum (not easy but it turns). I removed the caliper and the drum turned easily. My question, can I sand the pads to reduce its width or what do I have to check for something else. Thank you

No, that's not your problem.

There is a problem with the way you installed them or the caliper is not releasing the way it is supposed to. That could be due to a frozen piston, binding caliper slides or internally ruptured flex hose.

It needs to be diagnosed properly by a professional.

Thank you for taking the time to advise. I went and sanded the new pad and now it is much easier to turn the drum by hand. I will take it to a professional for a review. Again, gracias.

It's a little late now but don't ever do that. Now you have an uneven surface to contact the rotor.

I bet after you use the brakes once, it won't be so free.

Your answer posted twice. I'll delete one of them.

I was posting got lost in the mix. IT'S NOT FIXED JUST A DELAY. Hope it will quickly do it again you may have lost the chance to prove what it is? What did old pads look like? If not worn the same both inside left to right and outside left to right figure it out now. Bracket not lubed, caliper or hose. 1994 about time to do them all just anyway not a clue what your parts cost but not stopping is in the cards don't allow that!!

Old pads were worn out even for both sides, hose looks fine, so does the caliper. What do you mean by "bracket not lubed"?, I greased the two bolts that hold the caliper in place. Car going to the mechanic on Monday anyway. Thank you.

Let the mechanic look at it. You don't know what to look for.

Mauro: Yes to letting the mechanic check this out. This vehicle should be the common Asian style of disc brakes use a bracket that in turn holds the caliper. It has slides that have to be free to move. You can't remove the disc with bracket in place is sold separately to the caliper.

You also can't see any flaws in a high pressure, hydraulic hose INSIDE it not just rubber outside.
Granted you can just toss in pads in disc brakes and get another round without to many problems but it's now long past that unknown now what might still be original?
Just FYI with piston pushed disc type brakes is the are NOT sprung to retract to disengage rather the rubber seal(s) of pistons and the pins how they slide allow it to release obviously it didn't or can't now actually doesn't take much pressure to drag and get hot.
That's the real problem. You feel heat away from where this had to be almost glowing hot, the fluid would boil, make vapor then you end up with total loss of braking power.

That has to be avoided.
One more and let this go to the mechanic so you understand. That heat has then wrecked rubber parts, the friction material you just did and sanded doesn't work for long maybe just a couple slow checks and stops. Fluid wrecked, wear/friction parts wrecked not worn out. Once cooked like that they don't heal so it could be back to start this all over again - just know that much.

Good luck and hope but think this time the brakes are going to need doing it all for real . If anything be glad it's this old the parts should be less costly and not all the hard to do but could add up more money than you wanted. I/we can't help that,

Tom

Hi, Tom. I did not get everything you wrote but the point is I'm taking the car to the mechanic. Thank you for caring.
