1989 Honda Civic Automatic making a grinding noise

Hi there, I have been trying to find an answer as to what's happening with my car on the net with no luck, so thought I'd try here. I have a 1989 automatic Honda Civic 1.4 that has 97,000 miles on the clock, and in the last few weeks it has occasionally been making a strange noise. It happens when I brake and a the car is going down it's gears. I randomly get a grinding noise that seems to stem from the middle underside of the car. It isn't the brakes as these were checked not more than 2 months ago. I wonder if the gears are slipping under braking or I have a drive shaft issue? It almost sounds like the exhaust is dragging on tarmac but the underside of the car is totally normal, and the exhaust is only 2 years old. Anyone have any idea? Thanks

Hard to say for sure but still check the exhaust for loose parts or a rusted heat shield. Tap on it cold with a rubber hammer can find them. Check that first - I know it's only a couple years but some aftermarket stuff may not last too long, T

Thanks for the reply. I just used the exhaust as an example of the noise. It has happened twice in the last week and if it was the exhaust would it not be doing it regularly? I plan to take it to my local garage as soon as I can get a booking, but didn't want to risk damaging the car unecessarily so I thought I would ask to see if anyone had heard of this before.

Funny noises are just that. Who can say for sure? Noises while braking usually lead to a brake issue checked or not recently they should be again. A chunk can fall out of a pad or hardware with calipers can break. This isn't so suggestive of a driveshaft CV joint issue but a wheel bearing isn't out of the question. Motor mounts can allow metal to metal contact of exhaust parts or at the mounts themselves and produce quite a serious sound of something wildly wrong and it is in a way but it's more the normal engine vibration not being isolated by rubber that causes that - usually under a load on engine, either accellerating or using engine to slow vehicle could be possible too. The exhaust heat shield thing is so common especially in the rusty belts like where I live I stock stuff to fix that still and I'm retired or trying to be! At any rate by description I don't know of just one common thing that would always do or make a noise as described?? T
