2000 Honda Civic EX, 1.6L, 135K

Well, I *guess* it's a knock anyway... The car has been sitting for a few weeks. It has been cranked twice in that time--once to move it and again a few days ago to help keep the battery alive. That time it was VERY hard to crank, probably due to the gas sitting too long. My dad managed to crank it, then he put some kind of fuel treatment into the gas tank and let it run for several minutes. I then moved the car again and everything seemed fine.

I drove it today and it cranked easily but now makes noise. It's kind of hard to describe--I guess it's sort of a metallic rattling noise, almost like there is a loose object under the hood. It seems to be coming from near the drivers side dash. The rhythm and loudness are erratic, but it never gets super loud. It's worse at idle and low speeds, and the idle RPM's also seem too high at times (up to 1.5). Once I drove at 50+ mph I didn't really hear the noise anymore, but it was back when I slowed down again.

What could be wrong? Thanks!

PS - Before anyone says the gas couldn't have gone bad that quickly....I know people in my area who have had it happen. Maybe we have crappy gas around here?

Need your ears - is this a gas knock or a metallic knock? Need you to be sure. Three weeks IMO is nothing really. Could be belt noise or if timing belt way too old jumped a tooth which is a real problem if not known done on schedule.

Can you just remove the belt and check pulleys by hand. As you should know noises are warnings so if you can't figure out why or what get a pro's opinion at once. I doubt bad gas but possible. Easy with additives as most are a hoax IMO,

The noise really varies quite a bit. I would say it mostly sounds metallic? Sometimes it sounds like metal rattling, sometimes it sounds more like tapping/clicking, and once when idling it made a very slow knocking sound that didn't sound metallic at all to me. The noise definitely gets faster when accelerating at low speeds.

The timing belt has been changed on schedule, so I don't think that's it.

I know it will probably need to be looked at; was just trying to get an idea of what to expect :( Thanks again!

They make mechanics stethoscopes if you can use one or dangerous to suggest a listening rod but you MUST stay away from moving parts with that trick. I'm still here so haven't had my super long screwdriver go shooting thru my head yet! It could so don't unless you really know how.

Noises are tricky by web. Some can be well described and common and some can't so that's why I suggest a pro just listen to it and give you the diagnosis. You decide whether to fix it yourself or let a shop do it from there,

And don't use a screwdriver to listen to spark plug wires or ignition coils.

30,000 volts to the head can hurt a bit.

Especially when the spark comes off your nose and goes into the hood prop.

LOL! Maybe that's what's wrong with me? Shock therapy at it's best,
