2002 protege 5 squealing

2002 Mazda Protege5 (automatic) 2.0L, 169,000kms My Protege5 has recently begun to squeal. The very first time it happened I had stopped at a four way and was taking a right turn. It was so loud it scared the crap out of me! Its a high pitched squealing noise almost as if someone is pealing out of a parking lot. It does not happen when I start up my car. It happens when I take a turn, or when I begin to accelerate. When I am at a red light the noise begins when I accelerate, and if I take my foot off of the gas it disappears. The noise comes back when I put my foot back on the gas and then disappears once going a steady speed. The noise usually disappears once the car has been driven and is warmed up. I had my boyfriend replace the power steering belt, as he thought this was the cause since it was squealing when I took a turn. Unfortunately, the next morning it is still squealing. Not sure if it is related, but today I left work with my fan on high at 3, and it squealed as soon as my foot was on the gas, and everytime I accelerated from a stop. Once my car was warmed up enough I turned my fan down to one, and the car didn't squeal the whole way home. Not sure if this is related to the fan or if the car had just warmed up enough. Any advice? Thanks!

Check the belt tension. A worn out tensioner will allow the belt to slip when under enough load, such as when your power steering pump is working harder.

I just replaced the power steering belt and tightening seemed to have helped, although at random times it still does emit a smaller squeal, especially if the fan is on high. The tensioners look brand new and clean to me, should I just tighten the belt even more?

Took a quick look at the parts on this one. You don't have a spring loaded serpentine tensioner. But the power steering is on one belt and the alternator is on the other. Do not overtighten these belts or you will damage your accessories. See what kind of shape your alternator belt is at and if it is loose. Are you using the cheap belts or the good ones? Heard a lot of the cheaper ones noisy right out of the box. I put Gates on everything now and have no issues.

If anyone has spilled any coolant on the belt at any time in the past that will cause it to squeal until it is replaced. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
