2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser 2.2 liter 85,000 miles. About two weeks ago the car started making a howling noise while driving down the road. It has Progressively gotten louder. I believe it may be something with the driver side wheel. As that is where the sound is loudest. The car drives fine. No shimmy or shaking, but is progressively gotten louder. So far I have taken the car out of gear and revved the engine, and the noise is not there. It is only when driving forward, it gets louder the faster you go. I have looked under the car and the CV boots are not cracked or leaking. The clutch works just fine. The tires do not have any unusual wear patterns. The wheel does not feel overly hot, after driving. Thanks, Joel

Some bearings will get loud without making too much heat or getting loose. Sometimes what looks like a good tire can do this too. Try rotating your tires front to rear. If the noise stays at that wheel replace the bearing.

Agree with Nick. Check that out and if noise follows wheel/tire it's would be that to replace. Wheel bearings can make noise then quit depending on load. Steering one way or another, acceleration or any power vs none. The key is it's getting progressively worse so extra important to find it now. Spin the wheel while hoisted - should be near no noise on a good one and can be on a bad on for a while depending on how it/they are failed. Bearings don't heal. While wheel is off do inspect brakes as well, T

Sorry it took so long to get back to you guys. First of all, thank you for the trouble shooting advise. The first mechanic I took the car too said is was the Main transmission bearing, not the wheel bearing making the noise. Rather than pull out the bearing, he wanted to swap out the tranny for a good used one. I have been reamed before buying supposedly good used tranny's so I got a second opinon. The next mechanic, I let him diagnose on his own, without leading him and he determined, it was in fact a bad wheel bearing making the noise. He replaced it and problem resolved. Thanks again!
