87 Wrangler starter won't engage flywheel properly. There's gear grinding noise when I start my jeep. Flywheel teeth are slightly damaged. I've changed starter with brand new from Autozone. Bought a new battery and replaced/checked old wiring. Tightened both started bolts plenty. Each starter bolt hole has about 0.04" of total play. How does starter gear slide out in right location to engage flywheel teeth? Asking from gear meshing view point. Thank you in advance for your help.

The starter solenoid throws the gear out to engage the flywheel but once the flywheel is damaged, it has to be replaced or you will continue to ruin starters. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
