Banging Noise With Brakes Sign In

I have a 2003 Mazda Tribute with +/-125,000 miles on it.

Sometimes when I push on the brake I hear a loud banging noise and it feels like someone is under my vehicle pushing back on the brake. This does not happen every time or every day. The noise is not a squeal; it's a bang. I have noticed when this happens if i release the brake and push again a couple of times it goes away.

The brakes, brake lines, calibers and rotors have been replaced.

Any ideas? Does this sound safe to drive?

Thanks.

Re: Banging Noise With Brakes Sign In

It sounds like you have a faulty speed sensor or related circuit in one of the wheels and when your coming to a stop one wheel is reading slower than the others so the ABS interprets that as a brake lock up and activates the ABS. That's what your actually feeling is the ABS kicking in.

Thanks for your reply Hammer Time.

Do you think this is something the average mechanic can check on or does he need special equipment to detect this type of problem.?

It will require the use of a professional scan tool with ABS software so they can capture frame by frame data from the speed sensors as the problem occurs. Some independents have this equipment.

That makes sense. Do you think it would be more economical to just replace the sensor? Or would I have to have the test run?

No, It has one for each wheel and it could be anything in the circuit, not necessarily the sensor itself. It can even be the tone ring the sensor reads from.
