Belt too tight? Sign In

96 Cherokee Sport 4L 74K. Recently some work was done on the car. I have a feeling that the belt might be on too tight because when I put the A/C on there is a screeching coming from underneath the hood, it sounds like the power steering pulley. Everywhere I look online it says to check it by hand which it seems to check out fine and none of the local parts stores carry a belt tension tool. Never had a problem with any component causing noise until now. Does it make sense that a tight belt is causing this noise? thanks

Usually a tight belt doesn't screech. It's a loose belt or slipping belt that screeches. Might want to make sure that your AC compressor isn't locked up.

thanks for the response. If it is locked up, is there anything that I can do about it? Or do I need to have the whole thing replaced by a qualified A/C guy for a truckload?

If not needed you can get a by-pass for it or a used one with good bearing and unplug it!
