I probably could if you listed the year, make, model and engine size but you didn't,.............. so I won't. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Not relevant? You might want to read the FORUM RULES That looks like some sort of protective shipping packaging. You need to remove it.

You need to remove it. my bad, didnt read the rules. i find it hard to believe the housing would be drilled and tapped for two screws that have locking washers just for shipping. the metal plate would not really protect the sensor since its literally touching the sensor, thus any force on the plate is a force right on the sensor. perhaps protection of the electronics? but if so why non-metallic metal? nothing in parts box said "remove before installation".

Was bored enough to look this up at a few outlets. Two used on some shown, just one on some like the one shown. IMO that thing is just there as a protector for shipping till ready to install. Your call but think you'd be better off buying something of the sort and paying for an OE one at a real parts counter with a real person - just me perhaps on bull like that, T

That bracket is like Hammer Time said - to protect it before installation. BTW your pic is water marked from the Rock Auto site. Who knows who actually makes the parts and packages for what outlet even OE can change. If plugs match, mounts as the one you are replacing it's the one intended. I just didn't find one with the protective part. Reason I said if you are in a twist about it is to ask a real parts person why it's there with your old one in hand if in question. When you deal with things all the time you get to know what things are there and why either the tech or professional parts people don't have to use a computer they know what the heck they are doing and dealing with. Some don't especially large chain places and good luck with impersonal web hunting for an answer from a seller who you can't even communicate with at all - hence lower price. When YOU choose a part it still ends up YOUR responsibility to know what you are doing not them either way, T

Here is what the sensor is supposed to look like. If it doesn't look like this, then you have the wrong sensor. I went to the Rock Auto site that you got that picture from and what that is is the Beck Arnley version of the part. They also carry it in Standard brand that doesn't look like that. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

the pics used on the parts sites are not always the actual parts. the part i have, brand #, says its a direct OE replacement for my make/model/year. i find some pics that show this cover while others do not. the beck/arnley brand uses denso sensor but has the metal cover too. the sensor sold by BWD shows pic w/o the cover.

Went out surfing again. The one in top post is a few bucks cheaper and the only one found on the whole web with the extra thing for whatever reason even if it fit wouldn't use it. Makes me suspicious that all other outlets I could find didn't use that even if it could fit appears like protection for handling and probably inferior if it needed that vs the others fit or not. It's a Lexus (top dog) why skimp or risk it? T

well, the pics dont tell you much about the sensor itself. they are all Denso sensors attached to that AL bracket. so, not sure you can call one inferior to another.

YOUR pic came from Rock Auto and marked so. Brands or not will change suppliers and or sell off the brand names not a little but a lot so can't always go by that alone. That extra part smacks of something for temp use while handling it to be removed and if you already have it should say so but that too would be a waste of paper inside so who knows. It's an electrical part category IMO those don't get returned in general if touched. Guessing that the one in YOUR post up top used that because there was some problem with the sensor falling out of place or being damaged and chose that as a fix. Mostly I'm not sure but don't like that it's different then the OE one you took out - that's enough for me when most all others I found did NOT use that or look exactly like that but did appear it would bolt up. Done with all this stuff long ago now. Even some time ago OE parts would change not always for the better from even silly things like spark plugs and light bulbs some hard to get at so don't want crap over a buck savings. Your call, Tom

heres some more info. old sensor is Denso 02H18 1470 new is Desno 11Q11 1470 these are magnetic types, not hall if i said hall link deleted ............... not allowed i believe its the same exact sensor, so i will install it w/o the cover. edit: the little screws holding the cover on are on there real tight, this would not suggest to me a protective cover for shipping/handling. i am thinking this is a protective in-service cover to keep dirt from hitting the plastic tip of the sensor. my old sensor had "wind" wear mark running right through the center of sensor tip, no visible cutting into the sensor, but a wear mark nonetheless. its same motor as the Tundra uses, so i suspect the Tundra when used in more of work capacity (more dirt, etc) perhaps there is more wear on sensor tip so they put a non-magnetic metal cover to protect the sensor?

Quote: " i believe its the same exact sensor, so i will install it w/o the cover. " Might be. If the magnetic sensor pops right out at least they make good refrigerator magnets! Already said, your call, your car so do as you wish, Tom

its a all-in-one molded sensor, how would a magnet pop out? i just made edit to last post, the little screws and cover seem to be a added feature.

Plain IDK for sure! I would question a part that wasn't exact and do. For all I know that maker had a problem while making the dang thing before it went in a box or who knows?mis As said looked at all places I could and even Toyota V8s and the only one shown like yours was from Rock Auto and branded as Hammer Time said when I looked to and did show in a few same parts #. One thing with look ups and parts is when pics and #s get loaded into a market place's site they don't seem to be fast to correct wrong information fast or at all. It's a reason for the little I still chase down I go to a real person at a counter and they (real pro parts folks) know something is a superseded part or what but parts professionals are getting rare too out there, T

OK, this debate has gone on ling enough. You have been given all the facts about the sensor and you seem to want to debate it further. If you don't want to remove the shield, just go buy a sensor without it but I'm getting ready to close this thread if all you're going to do is argue about it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

rock auto is not the only place that shows the part like this. i actually got the part from Oreilly. there are several brands that come with this plate. due to construction, effort needed to make it that way, and it being non-magnetic metal, i am leaning 90% that its there to extend service life of the sensor, more applicable to vehicle like Tundra, etc. i will talk to Beck Arnley tomorrow as their part also comes this way.

You could contact Denso and ask them the purpose of that plate. I'm sure it is for shipping, but you never know. I'm curious to know the exact purpose myself. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Denso doesnt make the bracket, the OEM has to source that separately. I will give Beck/Arnley a call tomorrow.

Beck/Arnely says its an aluminum sensor protector and should not be removed. i will install w/ it on and verify clearance. and a tad confusing because B/A said "Toyota made it that way", so i dont know if this ImportDirect part is simply a supplier of OEM replacement parts or actually make the full part (i suspect the 1st), they cant sell it as "genuine Toyota" but they can sell it as "direct OEM replacement". from past experience with parts for other project, Toyota part #'s are exclusive to Toyota, nobody else can call up Denso and order a million of a Toyota part #. "Import Direct", "Standard Motor Products" are both brand names from BWD. and oddly, BWD guy tells me the BWD part is the exact same part they put in the Import Direct box, but the BWD guy tells me the BWD part should show like the BWD pic, w/o this cover. BWD also says the part they shove in the box is a Toyota part and that they just box it for retail, etc. post #18, why would you want to close this thread, nobody had a concrete answer just yet, just a bunch of conjecture & speculation. geez. and this one "That bracket is like Hammer Time said - to protect it before installation.", well, according to B/A, no its not. it makes no sense whatsoever to machine/tap the housing so a protective device could be added for shipping/handling. i thought the pros here would have seen this before.

last post. the B/A folks replied back to me with a better answer. this part has been superseded twice and the 3rd version includes this cover. the Toyota explanation for the cover is to solve a heat issue. i dont think i have a heat issue, been 114k miles w/o issue, but other applications using same part probably do, etc. i am not sure why BWD told me the part w/ cover is a old part, i think the guy had it wrong.

Agreed - let it go. You'll know if it doesn't work at all it was to be removed and all this long thread with ideas of what the heck with a couple similar parts showing up with and without not much makes total sense with this. Let it be. I wont for now but thread should be locked up soon as done with and you can ask for it to be reopened if you have especially a no go result from leaving that thing on, Tom
