Close to my 100,000 mile oil change I noticed a knocking noise upon acceleration. Mechanic told me that it was probably low oil level because when they did the oil change, it stopped. It's a 2012 Venza and I've always gotten my oil changed every 5000 miles (conventional oil, not synthetic). Well, at almost 103,000 miles I noticed the knocking sound upon acceleration. I waited until almost 104,000 miles and called the mechanic because the sound got worse. The red oil light flickered once or twice. He told me to immediately get it in. Turns out I had about half a quart. He told me to sell my car because it has excessive oil consumption and oil is contaminating the catalytic chamber. Eventually engine failure. After the oil change I noticed a tapping in the engine. Even when it is in park, it's tapping. He said it could be something that was knocked during the oil change, or maybe the lubrication knocked something, or maybe the noise is near the timing chain, but it would cost to investigate. My question is, because I waited until the oil was so low, could that have caused something in the engine to start failing? Will I have a hard time trading it in? Furthermore, do you think the mechanic should have told me to watch my oil level after the time I reported the knocking noise at 100,000 miles? I know nothing about cars, and frankly I completely forgot that the noise was related to the oil, I kept thinking it was a rattle, like something loose.
