Fan clutch noise after replacement Sign In

2006 Trailblazer 4.2 L. 60k miles

I had my service engine light on so I took it to the dealer. They said it was the fan clutch and of course wanted $1,000 to replace. I got a new clutch from a local auto parts store and replaced it myself. The service engine light no longer appeared so I thought everything was good to go. Now, when I start the car, i get a ticking noise for about 10-15 seconds. (does not tick if the engine is warm) The fan also gets loud and I get loss of power until it kicks into 2nd or 3rd gear. Could I have been sold the wrong clutch or just a defective one?

You had a computer controlled electric fan clutch sand you didn't get one of those from the local auto parts store. You just hacked up the system.

The fan clutch I installed is electric. I did tell the auto parts store the year model and engine size. You would think it would be the right one.

Do yourself a favor and return the aftermarket clutch and go and get an OE from the dealer. I have yet found an aftermarket fan clutch worth the effort to install and try; why they can’t get them right I don’t know?
The SES light is likely staying off because the PCM is now seeing the voltage drop it wants across the circuit when the PCM energizes the system. But for some reason the aftermarket clutch is likely staying engaged hydraulically; which will cause your power loss. The HP that's required to turn the fan blades is steeling the power too your drive train. You’re likely also hearing a lot of fan noise (roaring) during acceleration; if so then for sure the fan is not being fully released.
