2003 Ford Focus 2.0 Zetec Automatic 85,100 I just posted a couple of days ago about having problems with removing a CV axle. I have the back together and it makes the same sound. When I start the car there is a clunk and also when I put the car into drive there is a clunk. Then when I accelerate the sound like someone cracking their knuckles or like popcorn popping; therefore this is what lead me to think it was a CV axle. It always sounds like it is coming from the front drivers wheel area. Could it be something else that I am not aware of?

Those cars are famous for getting stones caught in the lower engine mount. It's located under the car where the transmission connects to the sub-frame. Also seen a few of the main engine mount go on some. The engine has excessive movment and if the mount is bad enough I have seen them snap the bolt where it mounts to the body.
