1999 Toyota Camry. 2.4 four cylinder. 175,000 miles. Automatic,A-C. It has a low shuddering, muffled, vibrating sound at the timing belt cover; it can be heard easily when you put your ear over the top of the timing belt cover; may be even a little low clicking ; I bought the car with 150K and it had the noise then. The sound is louder when cold and sometimes goes away momentarily when accelerating, but can often be heard while driving around town. The car runs smoothly and gets good mileage. There are no other problems except for the noise.

The way you find noises inside the timing cover is not by asking someone online. It's done by removing the cover and inspecting the components. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Right as HT said you have to look and know how old belts are and miles since done last too. I don't show a 2.4 but never sure - just 2.2 for a 4 cyl that is interference so craters the engine if it breaks or loses time. This is HIGH miles and many can do it and more but takes relentless attention to care of all sorts and records of what was done when. Noise? IDK, if old and overdue some belts peel off areas and make noise but still work. Timing belts need stay cogged on time vs other types so critical. If shows this is one that surely makes noise of assorted types on long borrowed time at high risk.......... Pic sites are failing me so hope it shows what you might find but shouldn't need to as you should see the problem when there, T

The timing belt has close to 50K according to the records I got with the car. I'm a little intimidated at taking off the cover, but may try it or take it to the mechanic. Am low income so do as much as I can, but try to use good judgement when the problem looks over my abilities. I actually heard another Camry with the same noise a few days ago and wonder if it is some sort of "Toyota" sound; I don't remember hearing it before. Thanks for the tip and time.

$$ is money and mistakes cost more so if in any doubt get help is the way to go with those. Other things could be making noise not just a belt coming apart or failing to contamination with oil or who know WITHOUT seeing it. 50K would be within interval but now a whole job need be known good not just a rubber belt of unknown brand or quality. Both time and miles count. Hey - if you break things to even get a look you would lose any savings, T
