Startup grinding noise Sign In

I've got a 1999 1/2 Silverado 2500 w/6.0 liter v-8. When I start my truck up, everything seems fine, but when it catches, it makes a short grinding noise as if I am holding the key too long in the startup position. My 1st thought was the starter but when I've had problems with a starter in the past, the vehicle just doesn't do anything. Any ideas?

A starter drive that does not retract properly could do that. If so a starter drive can be replaced separately from the starter in whole but some are a real pill and check prices as just the drive may be close to the whole thing.

Best to tend to real soon as you don't want any damage to "ring" gear or most call it the flywheel, T

Thanks Tom. Now, I'm leaving out of town for the next 4 days and was taking the truck for the trip. Would it be ok to let it go thru the weekend with minimal restarting of the truck (maybe 2-3 times a day)? I just don't have time to get it fixed before I leave but might be able to find time while I'm gone.

I can't venture a guess as to how long it can take this. The risk is the ring gear requires trans removal to replace and you still have the old problem.

Of note: An engine as this should only stop in three spots. If teeth are broken it will still start 2/3 of the time. If that happens you can turn the engine by hand or tools a little and get it to connect.

Your call, T
