If there is a leak by the Timing Cover is this motor oil ?
May this cause a serious problem for the future, since we have been quoted $2300 for the repair ?
It looks like to reseal the cover ,a lot of parts will have to come out !? What would be a fair repair price ?

It seals both coolant and oil test the fluid oil will not wash out of a paper towel, coolant will.

Diagnosis will matter it could be cracked or sign of worn out engine if oil.

Is or was there prior work there? Either coolant or oil being used up needing to add more?

You can look up wholesale cost of cover what the problem is, why did this happen?

Mactube, you've been around here long enough to know to post year, make, model and engine size with your original question.

OK I might do a quick test to see if coolant is leaking too. I just wanted to do a quick post to see if the estimate of $2300 is not extremely high and if the job is not as hard like for the purge valve replacement which has been estimated for $1200 but I now its a $30 piece easy to reach and can be replaced by just plugging it in + two clamps.

There weren't any prior repairs on the timing belt / cover .
The oil is not even dripping into parking spot, just sticking to various areas to the bottom of the car. That's why I'm wondering if a repair is urgent as recommended by dealer service .

This is quite a job. Labor time for changing the timing chain is 5.3 hours. I'm sure Land Rover labor rate is probably close to $200 per hour.

It would be foolish to do all this work and not replace the timing chain and related components. That will add considerable money for parts.

You didn't post the mileage so I can't tell you how much wear to expect.

The leak doesn't appear to be that serious so I don't know if I would worry about it right now.

They all are costly cars/things and a pest to fix anything. Parts outta sight bet no aftermarket?

It's just plain not a vehicle for the timid cost wise famous saying "If you have to ask you shouldn't own it" would apply,

really just looking to fix the leak ( know it makes sense to change the timing belt/chain at the same time when the cover is off ) but as off now just want to reseal the cover but you guy said with a little leak ( not dripping on the ground ) it can't cause any problem to the engine, oil top off with oil change should do it !?

77k miles

Yes , that's exactly why I want to price it out and see where I can safe but first of all if its even necessary.

Any thoughts on the faulty purge valve .. causes check engine light, but not other visible / noticeable problems when driving .... gas consumption maybe a little high lately.

Check your own oil don't rely on idiot warnings.
Fuel MPG if you watch it yourself is lower if cold out if just a warm up period.

Know what you really get the worst thing is Ethanol in fuel lowers fuel MPG - how special plus wrecks food from corn costs go way up.

Smart isn't a Government job quite apparently,

The dealer price for the valve is $214 and the labor time is .7 hr.

They will probably charge you a diagnostic charge also.

It's an emission control only. It usually won't effect performance unless it is stuck open.

IMO this should NEVER BE THE PROBLEM. Belts and more miles a chain in order.

It's an English car, costly as all get out if you can't stand the heat, get out of that kitchen!

It's really not that high of mileage. I would probably put this repair off for a while.

... heard that before meaning !? If you can't afford the car don't buy it?? ... but we already got it and want to safe money like everybody else otherwise credit card would have been swiped at Rover without second guessing... That's why the question occurs when do timing belt usually give in ?

@hammertime OK say no more .. on putting it off.
But do you think the oil leak can cause any major damage to the engine ? ( Of cause without this causing the oil lever getting low )

There isn't enough oil leaking there to even effect the oil level.

yes exactly, so in case of any oil dripping onto surrounding parts there shouldn't be any danger ?? Just wanna make sure to calculate risk.
