I have a 2002 Mazda Protege, Manual Transmission, with a little over 95,000 miles... My car has recently begun to make a whining type noise. I tend to notice this more in lower gears, especially as I slow the car down to come to a stop. It is also quite noticeable when the car is simply idling. What could be causing this?

Noises are tricky: Does it seem like a belt driven item? Take the belt off for moment and if noise is gone it and belt driven item to find and replace, T

It's probably one of the belt driven components, maybe ever just an idler pulley. The noise would have to be isolated with a stethoscope to narrow it down. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Hi there it could be the a bad timing belt or power steering pump , i don't think the manual transmission could do that because you said its doing it even when its idling right ? Sometimes also the clutch plate bearing dose that in a manual trans and you can do a test by pushing the clutch pedal while the car is idling and see if the noise goes away or not . Good luck buddy

valvebody: Thread is over 2 months old and original post was never responded to. One would hope it's taken care of by now. Nice when folks come back and say what fixed it, what was wrong or something but no dice with this one, T

I apologize for not posting what the official diagnosis was.....please know I am very appreciative of the suggestions and advice that are offered on this site - it is definitely invaluable to people such as myself with limited car knowledge... Anyway, my car ended up needing a new alternator......that seems to have solved the problem for now, however I'm sure I'll be back when my car begins producing another odd noise that is a mystery to me. Thanks again!

Noises from bearings are not definately going to happen - it's mostly luck of the draw. You may not see another noise from one. Some you do twice - who knows - they are cars! Thanks for the report, T
