drum brake noise after replacement Sign In

2006 Ford Taurus SEL 56K

I just had the rotors and drums turned and replaced all brake pads and shoes (DIY). The turning was done at a local auto parts shop.

When tightening the star wheel for one of the rear drums I noticed when rotating the drum it did not have even drag on it. It rubbed some on one part of the rotation and turned pretty freely in the other part. When I test drove it that wheel is making pulsing grinding noise (from rotating) when brakes are applied medium to hard. Was the drum turning perhaps done incorrectly (like maybe it wasn't centered)? Or, is this an problem with the shoes seating with the turned drum? Will it correct itself with use or do I need to have the drum checked again?

Could be the drum wasn't true when it was on the lathe. You could swap the drum with the other side to see if the noise goes to the other side.

If you have a camera, you could take a picture of the brake hardware in the drum to be sure it was installed correctly and upload it here:

Insert the link by copy and pasting in here. If you want to post a picture, click code twice at the bottom of the post window. Next, delete the word "CODE in each bracket and type IMG. Don't delete the brackets or the backslashes. Cut and paste the URL of your picture between the IMG code brackets. Preview post to see if the picture took before posting a reply.

Discrete,

I swapped the drums this morning and the noise remained on the right rear. In preparing to take a picture I noticed that the left shoe was not set behind the lower pivot point - it was in front of it! That's what I get for working in a poorly lit area.

I fixed that issue and now no noise. Surprise, surprise! Thanks for your suggestion to upload picture. That's what prompted me to get some good light on the subject.

Signed,
village idiot
