Car antenna problem

Replaced a broken antenna on my motor home (1 ton chevy truck body) and got great reception but the new antenna didn't fit right on the old base so replaced the old base with the new one. Now I get scratchy FM and no AM. The cassette player works okay. Is it grounding? I haven't changed the cable. Put the old base back on and still got poor reception as above. Any suggestions?
