Help!! After market Stereo 03 Chevy Malibu

Hello, My sister has an 03 Chevy Malibu, she bought it about 2 weeks ago, when she first got it the after market stereo worked just fine, then a few days later it just stopped working. Today I finally had the time to look at it, I have replaced my share of radios over the years but this is a first for me. The fuse is fine and the wires are connected like they should be. However, the red 12v wire is wired to a gold and white striped wired coming from the wiring for a cigarette lighter, this is the part that is new to me, the gold and white striped wire is not labeled as anything. Normally when I replace a radio I am starting out with the factory stereo in place and removing this to bring in the new radio, I have never dealt with one having already been installed by someone else so I am unsure as to what could be happening here, its a first for this vehicle too, even if it may be the radio itself, which wont come on at all. Not sure what else to look for, when I am putting a new one in I just follow the directions on the new radio and the radio wireharness that i purchase. Please help.

IDK but sounds pretty hacked in there. Can you identify the specific radio and see if you can put that or another in with just an adaptor plug to OE wiring instead of tapping into unknown wiring to you?
