why did my sub blow?

1999 Dodge durango 5.2l V8 185k miles Dual amplifier info Dual channel briged for a 300 watt output at 4 ohms with a 460 watt peak. With a 40hz-600hz frequency adjustment range and a 0-12db. Bass boost adjustment range Pioneer subwoofer info 12" pioneer subwoofer with 800 watts max rating and a 150 nomial rating at 4ohms. So as i said i have my amp briged to put out anywhere from 300-460 watts and my sub has a max power of 800 watts so at best i was only pushing a little over half of what it could take but somehow i blew my sub. I noticed a smell like hot brake pads on my way to the store after i just got done hooking it all up and then it blew my 40 amp fuse on my amplifier. I put in a new fuse wondering why it blew and found my sub was blown and rattling around like crazy. What happened? I dont understand what went wrong at all! I have it hooked up the way it should be and i had to bridge my amp because the single channel output is only 100 watts at 2 ohms. But even tho my amp is briged it shouldnt have blown my sub right? Im so confused about what happened anu help would be great, the only thing i can think of is that my hertz were set wrong and messed everything up if thats possible. I'm going to guess, but your amp is not powerful enough for the RMS rating of the speaker. Yes, a high powered amp can blow a speaker that is rated less, but an amp that can't handle the power what the speaker is rated for can also blow the speaker. That might explain why the fuse popped because the amp was maxed out and delivered it's internal voltage supply across the speaker coil which melted the coil and popped the speaker. Really? Ive had this setup in my camaro for two years took it out a year ago and just got it in my Durango it worked for awhile and then u smelt something like hot brakes and about 30 seconds later my sub was gone. I'm not a car stereo engineer or anything like that. If your speaker is rated up to 800W. You have an amp that can put out 460W bridged and you crank it up as high as it will go, unless the amp has the ability to clip the current if it gets too high, it will dump the source across your speaker. If the fuse pops, that means the more than 40 amps was going across the speaker coil windings, which I don't think they can handle. Well i found out my subs rms was 50-150 watts hust now :( so i was oushing too much :/ GM ASEP 26 SCC Milford ASE certified in Brakes and Electrical on Thursday April 5th 2012

Well the opposite is true too. If your speaker is rated at 150 watts and you crank it up using a 460 W amp, you can blow the speaker also. If the windings burnt up and shorted out while you had it cranked up, that would be like a short circuit through the amp causing a vast amount of current passing through the amp until the fuse popped. Self destruction. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Yeah thank god my amp is okay and its just the sub. Guess next time ill leave it unabridged or put two on it. But yeah i guess i pushed it too hard :/ oh well gotta learn sometime! GM ASEP 26 SCC Milford ASE certified in Brakes and Electrical on Thursday April 5th 2012

I went through that phase of a loud stereo when I was in high school. Now I look more for sound quality than intensity. Crisp and clear. I love when you can hear someone farting in the background when a musician is doing a cello solo during a concert. Don't throw your sub away. You can recone your sub or have a company recone it for you. They make kits and it isn't as hard as you think. I run a pair of 12" JL WO subs with a Crossfire VR705D amp and I am just now replacing the subs after 11 years of heavy use. I have seen too many Pioneer WalMart specials blow up easy and really not give you the slam you wanted in the first place. But with my amp its 5 channel. I put 50w RMS to 4 speaker channels that have a HP crossover that is user-adjustable to protect them. The subs get the other 500w RMS and I can't guess what peak works out to. These amps are known to be low rated by the factory. But the thing is my whole system is not only clear as a bell by using the sound filters in the amp the clean up the signal, its also protecting my other speakers from getting too deep a bass note and blowing. The downside is this amp was $600 11 years ago. But JL put out a competetive amp for less about 3 months after I got mine. So they are available. I don't have AC in my truck, but I can clearly hear every note on the highway with the windows down and can rattle houses if I really feel like turning it up. I have never heard it distort because I would need earplugs to be in it at that high a level. Get the good subs, and look at amping the whole system. You'll thank me when you hear it and well worth the cash. As an extra bonus, good amps are so efficient I don't have to run a capacitor on my power feed.

no doubt the good stuff is worth the money i just dont have the omney i need for the stuff i really want right now haha, this sub and amp came with my camaro back 3 years ago and so ive just kept it and never had a want to upgrade but when the money comes i definelty wont skimp on the good equipment haha, ive known this sub was a cheap one since ive had it but it worked and thats all that mattered to me haha GM ASEP 26 SCC Milford ASE certified in Brakes and Electrical on Thursday April 5th 2012
