The circuit that excites the alternator field is the L circuit grey wire. If you ground that wire with ignition on, the charge lamp should come on. If the lamp is on when you turn the ignition on with the engine is off, the L circuit is good. We checked that circuit in the beginning.

Will check both of these wires tomorrow. Have you heard of a company called AES and they do PCM repairs on the internet...r they okay? If I send this out and they repair it, will it then have to be towed to dealer for rescan or is that just a nasty rumor????? Thanks for all of your help and I will get back to ya tomorrow after we finish these test.....THANK YOU so much for your time and patience

I haven't heard of AES, until just now.

Unless they can't repair the bad circuit that concerns the charging system in the PCM, another PCM to be installed will have to be flashed with the program for that specific vehicle. If they can repair the circuit on the board without erasing the EPROM, you just stick it back in the car when you get it back. I am sure they have the capability to do reflashes. Call and find out.

I grounded the blue wire and ran the full field test and nothing happened. Revmoved the alternator, went to auto zone, stood and watched the test be run twice and the alternator came back fine both times. Is the bluish wire for sure the wire to be grounded...the one that makes the alternator go full field? NEXT???????????

Another possibility is the rotor coil isn't being excited. The rotor has to be excited to basically turn on the alternator. Once the alternator is turned on, the stator supplies voltage to the rotor coil which is grounded by TR3 to control the stator output voltage/current.

The charge lamp acts as a resistor, but may not let enough current to pass through to the rotor to excite it. One thing that you could check is the preexcitation resistor. Remove it from the fuse panel and use an ohm meter to check the resistance. You should only get a resistance reading one way. If you reverse your leads, you should have no continuity (OL or infinite). The diode after the resistor blocks current flow in one direction. I don't know what the resistance is of the resistor, but it should not be open in both directions or shorted.

We do have the same exact car at the shop as yours at this moment, so I may use that one to see what should be what. Its charging system is operational by the way...Smile

The pre excitation resistor is located on the passenger compartment fuse block. It is on the rear side of the block between the door lock relay and tail lamp relay.

Tested the excitation resistor much earlier, same way you expalin and the voltage only read one way and the resistance as well, only one way. I remember that is was like .3 v on one end and 12 v on the other end of the resistor. I don't remember what the resistance was, but it did haved a reading. What wire puts power to the rotor that you are talking about?

This is a few different test we have ran.
1. Jumper between battery hot terminal to the alt. stud (no charge 12.5)

2. Jumpered between pre exitation resistor to gray wire at alt. (no charge 12.5)

3. Jumpered blue wire at back of the alt showed full field (not charging 12.5)

4. Installed a different battery thinking a possible short in the battery. Battery still does not charge.

I'm at work sitting in front of the other Hyundai that is exactly the same as yours. I tested the wiring at the alternator connector with it unplugged and this is what I found.

Key OFF

Bat Lug: 12 volts
Orange: 12 volts
Blue: 0 volts
Grey: 0 volts
Pink: 0 volts

Key ON engine OFF

Bat Lug: 12 volts
Orange: 12 volts
Blue: 0 volts
Grey: 12 volts
Pink: 12 volts

Engine running

Bat Lug 12 volts
Orange: 12 volts
Blue: .5 volts
Grey: 12 volts
Pink: 12 volts

With connector plugged in the blue wire should have around 8 volts

See what numbers you get from those tests when you get a chance. Then we'll go from there..Wink

Something is wrong with the pink and grey circuits. You did make sure that you had the connector unplugged when making these checks?

Might want to recheck your grey with the key on engine off.

Pink should have 12 V with key on engine off and engine running. That comes from the PCM. If there is no voltage there, you'll have to ohm check the pink wire to be sure it is good. If the wire ohm checks good, it's possible the PCM has an internal problem.

Do not jump the pink wire to battery positive.

You only ohm check the wiring when there is no power on it. You basically have to unplug the connector from the PCM and the connector from the alternator. Then you check for 0 ohms from one end of the wire to the other for the blue and pink wires. Your checking to be sure that there is a path for current to flow from one end of the wire to the other.

Im having an issue like this. Wasted a day and got nowhere.

Did the new PCM solve it?
And what did the PCM cost you?

Is there a way to start the alt without the PCM? I want to be sure before I replace another part.

My volts when system running,,

Engine Running
Bat Lug: 11.68 volts
Pnk: 4.38 volts
Gry: 11.20 volts
Orange: 11.12 volts
Blue: 5.5 volts

And another time when i was testing i got somthing like.
Bat Lug: 11.68 volts
Pnk: 4.38 volts
Gry: 1.55 volts
Orange: 11.12 volts
Blue: 5.5 volts

Thanks
