'06 Hyundai Elantra Fast Draining Battery Sign In

I have a '06 Hyundai Elantra with some electrical issue. I hit a deer about a year ago and had to replace the passenger side headlight. All other damage, from what I can tell, is just cosmetic. For some months of nighttime driving with headlights on, I noticed the dash lights would blink when using the turn signal. After a while, the dash started staying dark for several seconds.

Over the last few weeks, the car started taking longer and longer to start. I could hear the starter trying. Finally, it just wouldn't. The battery was confirmed to not be holding any charge, so I replaced it. TWO days later, it started doing the exact same thing.

I assume I have a short, or a bad ground, somewhere. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You'll need to do a parasitic draw test using an amp meter in series with a battery cable and battery.

Re: '06 Hyundai Elantra Fast Draining Battery Sign In

Thanks for the video. It really helped give me an idea as to what I'm actually trying to do. I do have a potential problem though. On the video, the amp draw was constant on the meter, but mine was all over the place. I'm assuming it's because of how I'm holding it. Also, I'm not using a clamp like in the video. After pulling a fuse and touching the lead again, it seems I get the highest draw at first contact. Am I over thinking this? Tips? Thanks.

You can't do it that way. It has timers that have to expire.

BATTERY DRAW PROCEDURE

There is a procedure for finding a battery draw like that.

You will need a digital ammeter and a jumper wire with clips on the ends to do this.
First rig any door switches so you can have a door open without triggering the interior lights and unplug the hood light. Remove one battery cable and attach the meter in series between the battery cable and battery post. Take the jumper wire and also attach it the same way. Leave the jumper wire on for at least 30 to 40 minutes to expire all the automatic timers. Now remove the jumper wire and read the meter. Anything over 50ma is too much draw. The way you locate this is to start removing fuses one at a time until the meter drops to normal level. This will be the circuit with something staying on. Determine what components are part of that circuit and check them individually until the problem is isolated.
