1981 gmc suburban loss of voltage?	Sign In

Hey everyone.
I have a 1981 gmc suburban with what I think is a loss of voltage. Battery will be fully charged but starter just dosnt seem to be getting the electricity it needs.

-Engine has started twice recently but will die within 4 or so mins.
-Engine will start if i connect the positive on starter with the negative on battery(found this out by accident when checking electricity from batt and starter using a voltometer)
-alternator was giving enough juice to battery so im thinking my alts ok(checked with voltometer when truck was running)

Im not a expert when it comes to vehicles so would love any input from you guys,

What? That can't be true. Anytime you connect the positive with the negative, what you get is a fire.

No, that didn't happen. Te moment positive meets ground you have a fireworks display and melted cables. You are doing something else there.

Make sure the motor is grounded correctly. Check all you battery cables.
