I have a 1984 Mercedes Benz 380SE V8 with 115,000 miles. I got in my car and raised the passenger window before backing out of the garage. A little way down the road I turned the windshield wipers on and they went about half way across and stopped. The power windows have also stopped working. I checked all the fuses and they are OK. I also moved a few of the relay switches that are in the fuse box, but nothing seems to help (there are 6 that are the same type and 5 I could/did not switch around). Any ideas of what to try next?

Why can't you switch around same relays? Stuck? Perhaps before going totally nuts check that any grounding of body metal is good via usually straps to engine block that in turn return to battery. Wild guessing for all those to drop out at once but I would begin testing that out, T

I checked the ground wire at the battery and it is in good shape. The lights and high beams, sunroof, radio, air conditioner all work OK, so it seems isolated to the wipers and windows. The wipers are on the same column lever with the turn signals and high beam controls, both of which are still working OK. At the front of the fuse box are 6 silver relays that are all the same. I have switched them around, but nothing different. There is a tall silver relay with a fuse on top. There is a different number silver relay about the same size as the 6 up front. There is a big black relay on the outer side of the fuse box. There are 2 black relays at the back of the box. Is there a way to test the relays with a voltmeter? Do you know which relay operates the wipers and windows?

These are not my cars for much real experience. Relays. Power available and power out when requested with just a test light. Back to grounds. Just one doesn't cut it. They are all over the place and when two items go out at once you've lost something in common and may share a common ground that just gave out or common power supply. Sorry I just have little to no info other than follow the path with a test light forward and back on items that don't work all at once like that, T
