1992 Chevy Cavalier blinker problem... Sign In

hello all, I'm looking for an answer to a problem I've been having for over a year now. I have no left blinker, if I turn on my left blinker, the arrow stays static in the 'on' position and the light does not turn on in back, but it does in front. I have no hazards either, I checked all my fuses, they're all good except my 'cig lighter' fuse, that one is blown. I really don't care about my cig lighter so should I go through the trouble of replacing that fuse? what could possibly be the problem? bad wiring? corrosion? and if so, how do I go about fixing it? or what kind of mechanic would I go to about that? thanks!

Have you replaced the bulbs in the rear yet? That would be a good starting point.......

It's not a fuse problem. The problem is in the rear light or it's related wiring. Your just going to have to use a test light that can show power or ground and test the socket for both. Most of the time, the sockets go bad.

Is replacing the sockets easy? or should I get that professionally done? any documentation you know of for replacing it? :D

Replacing the socket is just a matter of cutting and splicing wires but you first need to diagnose what your problem is, not just throw parts at it..

Fair enough, now, I have a '2-range voltage tester' that says it checks voltages 110/220V AC/DC I use it around the house to test outlets, it did not work on my fuses when I tried it, will this work on my car's sockets? before I go down there and rip the trunk apart ;)

Yes, that will work. Use the socket ground for your negative so you end up testing that also.

ok, after some rigorous cleaning, the bulb actually came on! now I don't know if its my own stupidity, or whatever else, but I could not get my voltage tester to give me a reading, maybe I was touching the wrong thing, or maybe it is bad? not sure, but the bulb did come on, still no 'blinking' though, just comes on static...

Your getting poor contact. Change the socket and bulb and see what you have then.

Forget the junkyard. You'll end up with just as many problems as you have now. Just go to the auto parts store. The plug should be under $10
