1994
Pontiac
Grand Am
3.1L V6
130,000 mi

Sometimes when I turn the key to start the car nothing happens, no noise, nothing. The lights, the radio, etc all work fine but the lights on the dash do not light up at all. If I fiddle around enough sometimes the car starts or sometimes it stops cranking halfway before starting and the lights on the dash go off again. I took the car to the mechanic but he said it was fine and it started right up for him and I took it home and shut it off and I had to fiddle with it for 5 minutes before it would start again. What could be the problem?

Battery cable connections - both ends of each highly suspect for that,

There were some issues with the ignition switches on these years of GM’s. With your description of the problem; it would be my main suspect. To confirm this you would need to be there with a voltmeter or test light connected to the switch; the next time the car decided not to start.
