i have a 1996 Nissan hard body d21 pickup that has a wiring problem that i cant find. during the day its fine but at night when the lights are on, the charge and brake light come on in the dash but alternator is still charging and battery is steady at 13.3 volts, also keeps blowing the driver side high beam out as well. any pointer or advise to solve my dilemma? I've checked all the connectors and fusible links and wiring from the alternator but im thinking its in the headlamp switch or its wiring system. 3rd new alternator ans 2nd new battery. and also curious as to why the brake light come on with the charge light in the dash? Thanx! DD

It's probably some kind of issue with the dash cluster, probably a ground. would the cluster also make all the lights go bright and dim with the intermittent charge light? it actually blew the dome light out as i sat with the truck running and the door open. it would have been the map light but it got real bright and i shut it off.

That's contrary to what you stated in your question. You stated " but alternator is still charging and battery is steady at 13.3 volts,". The only thing that can make a bulb get brighter and blow out is higher voltage and you say that didn't happen so which is it? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

sorry! had a bit of rectal cranial inversion! i had forgot to mention that in the first msg. when the charge light is off it spikes in voltage, dont know how much it spikes, i was unable to test it before the truck started going haywire with the lights. but i did notice that it only does this with the headlights on. thats why i was thinking it was something in that system thats causing a malfunction. ive checked all the conectors but havent ohm tested that harness yet. wanted a better target to focus on to solve the problem without having to take it to someone. truthfully id like to set fire to the whole thing and make smores over the flames but i gotta drive it! oh i might wanna add that this truck ran a 120 mile paper route in the rural areas of phoenix for 2 years and has gotten its but kicked, dont know if that means anything, but every bit of info counts! sorry for the lack of info before thanx! double d

That was pretty important info to leave out. The only things that can cause a spike like that are a bad voltage regulator or grounded field wire. The regulator is built into the alternator.

No, that's internal to the alternator on yours.
