1997 Mercury Sable liftgate locking/unlocking Sign In

1997
Mercury
Sable Wagon with remote access
174000 km

Hello,
I have problems to lock and unlock the liftgate by the key or the master switches. Sometimes one or the other works, but most of the time not. The liftgate lock motor seems to be in order. The problem might be with the liftgate release relay or the remote anti-theft personality module (RAP).
However I can't locate either the release relay nor the RAP module. In the schematics available the liftgate relay is numbered as C257 and the RAP as C254. I could find the all door lock and unlock relay named C255 and C250.
My idea is to unplug the liftgate release relay and the RAP module if they are defective and place a jumper at the relay base to modify the the wagon in without RAP.
Can you please give me some advice in the matter.
Otto

Those numbers identify connectors, not components.

You can't simply "jump out" these circuits. These relays simultaneously reverse polarities. You are going to start a fire if you start jumping things. That liftgate relay that you are looking at is just a "release" relay and doesn't operate any key locks.

Thank you for the advice. I do not like to jump out the circuit dangerously.
I assume that either the Liftgate Release Relay and/or the RAP module does not work properly all the time. Therefore I like to know the location of both devices to check them up.

How do you expect to do that? You don't even know how they are supposed to operate. How are you going to tell is they are working properly?

You obviously are not listening to what you are being told. The release relay is just that "a release relay". It plays no part in locking of the tailgate.

Re: 1997 Mercury Sable liftgate locking/unlocking Sign In

The Liftgate Lock Motor receives a signal from S300(or is it 306?Icant read it properly) via the normal closed contact 30 - 17a (I cant read the number properly) of the Liftgate Release Relay. On S300 are also connected all the other Door Lock Motors. The other side of all the Motors are connected to S312. S300 and S312 changing polarity if the All Door Lock Relay or the All Door Unlock relay are energized. The locking or unlocking of the Liftgate will not work, if for any reason the Liftgate Release Relay is energized by receiving an N signal from the RAP module C254, pin 7. By removing the Liftgate Release Relay and jumping pin contacts 30 - 17a the locking/unlocking of the Liftgate should function independent of any signal coming from the RAP module.

There is no pin 17a so i assume you mean pin 87a. The relay is already designed to rest at that position which is the circuit for lock only. If you try to unlock it in that mode, you will likely fry the rap module. That relay is designed to open that circuit for unlock.
