1999 Mercury Grand Marquis Odometer Problems Sign In

Hi all. Am new to this site. Test drove 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis today. Speedo works but odometer does not. Am considering buying this car. Do I have to replace the whole cluster or can gears be replaced? Also Needs rear axle pinion seal replaced. Body is in great condition and the price is cheap. Any thoughts would help. Been repairing cars since the 1970's. Thanks,Kevin

Yeah, it's been about that long since they used mechanical odometers.
Just about all of them are electronic now.

You'll probably need a whole cluster.

You can send the cluster to a speedometer repair shop and have it repaired. Have you had the vehicle in the air to see how it is doing underneath. Seen a lot of those with ball joint issues. When you go to replace the pinion seal, replace the flange and the nut also. Ford still sells them.

Thanks for the heads up on the pinion seal flange. Decided to buy the car. Never worked on the 4.6 V8,so I will most likely be asking more questions on this animal. Car price was $1600.00 and I traded a rotted out 99 Bonneville. Got $800.00 for trade so I payed $800.00 plus tax for the car. Thanks again and will post more later...Kevin
