2000 Chev Blazer Fuel gage problem

Any suggestions would be appreciated! My 2000 Chev Blazer has an intermitent problem with the fuel gage. When the tank is about 3/4 full and below, the gage does not go lower. Sometimes, when parked and more than 3/4 tank, the gage goes to empty and the dash light(Low fuel) comes on until the vehicle is moved. Could this be a wiring problem, or fuel pump problem? Isn't the level sender part of the fuel pump?

It could be in the wiring, but these years of GM’s have had a problem with the in
tank-sending unit. They are attached to the fuel pump assembly but can be changed without having to replace the pump.
You can do a basic test on the wiring and the dash unit yourself. By unplugging the wiring harness back at the fuel tank and turning the ignition key to the run position. The fuel gauge should go to the full mark, probably way over the mark. There is more to doing a complete check but it’s a little to involved to try and type it out, along with you not likely having the test equipment anyway.
So if the gauge does head way over to the full mark with the tank disconnected you have better then a 75% chance that the problem is in the tank.

Thanks Dan.
Was there an issue with high sulfur content in Shell gas? Wasn't there a class action suit on this?
I will get a replacement sending unit after confirming that the wiring is okay.

The "People's Republic of Massachusetts" has required the use of totally toxic chemicals in the gasoline sold here that cause problems. It has made more than one fuel gauge screw up. Keep track of your miles from known full and try some injector cleaner - it might just self correct! Otherwise a repair is indicated.
Dan has the test for you to help decide whether it's the tank or dash unit - usually the tank sender but worth the check. Good luck,

Your more then welcome but remember that this is a long distance diagnosis so don’t just run out and start buying parts.
As far as all the exotic chemicals they put into today’s fuels, who really knows what the cause is for things to fail while being submerged in the fuel, not until there is enough of a problem to effect a large number of people.
