2000 expedition pwr door locks

Our 2000 ford expedition pwr door locks work erratically. From inside switches, or key fob. Usually the passenger door lock, and the door behind the driver operates all the time. The drivers door lock and the door behind the front passenger seat only work from the two (2) key fobs 30% of the time. On those two we sometimes have to manually grab hold of them and pull the knob up. I'm not mechanically learned and can't afford to pay a dealer what it would cost to get it repaired. The vehicle has a 5.8 engine, and going on 280,000 almost all, highway miles. It has been a sweetheart of a vehicle even though the mileage is only between 15-16 mpg. That is what it has averaged ever since we bought it with 14,000 miles on it. I would appreciate any help/advice I can get on how to correct the door lock problem and perhaps increase the mileage. These ridiculous gasoline prices are now keeping us from doing any unecessary driving. Thank you and have a great day. W.R.

Could be lock actuator worn out or I would check the wires in the rubber boot that the wires run though from the body to the door. The wires become brittle and break from the constant opening and closing of the door.

Hi. Me again. I checked the wiring in the doors. Moved them around and tried to feel if there were any breaks in them and looked to see if any of the insulation was rubbed/worn off. Couldn't see anything wrong there. Is checking/replacing the door lock actuator a -diy- job, or do I need to take it to a professional? Thank you for letting me pick your brain on this! ! ! W.R.

Trim Panel—Front Door
Removal
NOTE: High series shown, low series similar.
NOTE: The window must be completely down to remove the front door trim panel. - ..
- Remove the screws.
- Remove the inside door handle cup (22634).
- On low series front door trim panel, remove the screw and the window regulator handle.
- Start in a lower corner and work around the panel and separate the front door trim panel (23942) from the front door (20124) to disengage the pin-type retainers.
- Lift the front door trim panel to disengage the top lip from the weatherstrip.
- Position the front door trim panel aside.
- Separate the power window switch finish panel from the door trim panel.
- Release the locking tabs.
- If equipped, remove the courtesy lamp bulb from the lens and remove the front door trim panel.
Installation - reverse ^^
Removal - Remove the front door trim panel (23942). For additional information, refer to Section 501-05.
- Remove the watershield.
- Remove the power door lock actuator.
- Disconnect the electrical connector.
- Drill out the rivet.
- Disconnect the actuator rod.
- Remove the actuator.
Installation - To install, reverse the removal procedure.
- Use Heavy-Duty Riveter to install the actuator rivet.
You will need to buy new riviots from ford they are a special riviot and you will need a heavy duty riviot gun

W.R. - Z mentioned the rivets. This will be a stopper if you can't get the right gun for those as they are bigger and takes unreal force to pop the new one which really can't be fakes. Lot's of parts outlets have a loan-a- tool program - free with deposit. Last one I used I borrowed as it was a nice hydraulic one that cost about $300 bucks, Yikes!
I've faked it with nuts and bolts (proper but not original) but don't think you can on this one.

ZMAME AND TOM GREENLEAF: Well, it's taken me all this time by working on it evenings and sometimes on weekends but I finally got the doors apart and replaced the actuators and got everything working just fine.
