Hello I am a first time poster. Please bear with me. Smile

I have a 2001 Honda CRV 2.0L with about 200,000 miles on it (266000 km). I drove the crv back home from work one day without any issues. About a half hour later I tried to start it and it gave about a half a crank, then just a single click sound every time I turned the key. I recharged the battery over night. It read 12.5V after the charge. I cleaned the terminals and cables and hooked it up and tried again. Still just a single click sound every time I turned the key. The click sound is coming from the passenger side of the vehicle, either inside or under the hood at or near the fuse panel. I tested the negative terminal to the starter case for continuity and it was fine. I even tapped the started a few times with a hammer, but no such luck. I'm doubtful it's the alternator since the battery didn't die while I was driving. I'm at a loss as to know where to turn next for a solution.

Any help would be much appreciated.

PS I also tried boosting it from my civic but still just a single click...

Before going too far, put a socket on the crankshaft bolt and see if the engine can be turned by hand.

I will try tomorrow. Its getting cold and dark now. I'm guessing you are thinking the engine is seized? I'm suspecting not as I had an oil change with the past few months and really don't put many miles on the vehicle.

Check as Hammer Time just said. Go backwards and forwards a little.

IDK - recent oil change may or may not be any reason. So for description if cables are good at both ends and same behavior even with a boost a stuck engine either seized or maybe hydraulic lock of oil, fuel or coolant if so would spit out with spark plugs removed.

Barely matters but 266,000 KM should = about 165,000 miles both high enough for surprises,

I'd recommend having the battery tested first. Just because you charged it doesn't mean its good. It needs to be tested. That would be the easiest thing to start with.

Ok I just spent 45 minutes on the crv and here is my update.
I put a socket on the engine crank bolt and manually turned it so the engine isn't seized thankfully.
I took the working battery out of my civic and tried it in the crv, still the same click sound. I then tried my crv battery in the civic and it worked perfectly.

So, it isn't the engine and it isn't the battery.

Where do I go from here?

Sounds like the starter. If you can access it try tapping on the body of the starter with a large screwdriver or small hammer while a helper is trying to start it.

I tried the tap the starter trick on day one with no such luck. I might hot wire the starter next. Or any other ideas?l

You can either hotwire the starter or test for power arriving at the small wire when the key is held in start.

No, if you DO have power, the starter is bad. If you don't get power on that wire, the problem is elsewhere in the circuit and you will have to follow a wiring diagram.

Ok here is my daily update. I managed to get one end of a jumper wire on the constant terminal on the starter and the other end on the small terminal on the starter. There was a spark. I also used my meter to test the constant terminal a d it read more than 12V.

I removed the two bolts holding the starter in place but the starter seems stuck. Any trick to removing it? And is it the next logical step to remove it and test it on the bench?

You likely just don't have all the bolts out yet.

According to a crv video I just watched, the starter just has two bolts and should slide right out. I did manage to loosen it a little by putting pliers under it and lifting, but its still not enough.

It should basically fall out when the correct bolts are removed.

It is 15 years old and probably just stuck. Tomorrow I will try again.

Ok, time for my daily update. I have the starter removed. And I took it inside the house. I noticed the exposed wire from the solenoid to the starter was in very bad shape. So bad that it fell apart when I touched it. Could the condition of this wire be the root cause of my single click sound?

That's not just a piece of wire. It is a braid that is part of the starter magnet/armature. If that is damaged, you need a new starter.

No way to replace the braided wire?

OK, we've wasted enough time on this.

If you don't like the advice fine, but I'm not just going to keep repeating myself because you're looking for a Mickey Mouse way to fix this.
It needs a starter.

Closing this now.
