2002 buick pass. window Sign In

I have a 2002 buick lesabre with a 3.8 and the pass. window goes down but not up,drivers master switch is same, unless I hot wire it then it goes up, I got a switch and modulator from a scrap yard and it's the same ,. I can't imagine that both modulators have the same defect but the door has been replaced at the body shop from a minor accident. It's a door I got for a lot less than they would have paid . The replacment door has no lock set like the original and I wonder if this has anything to do with the problem, would they be linked so that the window can't go up with the door locked, or something to that effect? Can I close the lockset circuit to get it to work? Thanks

Basics first: Do you get power and ground at the motor upon request? Probably not as if you "hot wired" right to it and it works it's not getting thru.

Some common issues are power or ground wires for an item get broken inside door jam where they bend, even unseen inside the wire's insulation. That area is hidden by a snorkel of sorts with all wires that go to things in that door. Worth a check before looking for something else IMO,

I'll check for a problem between the modulator and motor, I tested the switch with a multimeter and it worked, plus I have the other switch and the master at drivers door ,each one puts it down but not up, ultimatly the modulator calls the shots and that needs a diagnostic tool of it's own I've been told. I was just looking at the original harness it doesn't look like the lockset is involved electrically,I'll compare the two and go back to basics when the car gets home later. I can always take it some where but I'd like to save some $$

When you say "modulator" what do you mean? The "regulator with motor in it?"

When you jumped it and it did work did you just add 12V+ to one of the wires to the motor?

Since close to forever motors of the sort you are reversing which wire get power and which gets ground on purpose for which way the motor will turn. Do that to an unplugged motor from the vehicle if testing. If it only went down unless you were watching it draw current (you can) to go more down (it can't of course but would try) it's just not reversing polarity.

? Can a window be disabled from going UP if window is down? Buicks have done some different things but I don't know of that trick for when doors are locked so can't say. Makes some sense to not lock yourself out but not sure if that's part of this at all.

You should see this with a test light testing for both 12V+ and for ground added.

If you see the power reverse and window will not go up it could be glass is just too tight in there or still a slight maybe it does get power and ground just not enough in a frayed wire most likely in door jam as said. You can sometimes wiggle that when a problem first shows up wire may not be totally broken yet and get it to work...........

Re: 2002 buick pass. window Sign In

By "modulator" I mean a white plastic solid state pack in each door where all wires meet, the window goes up easily when you disconect the motor wires then attach wires to the motor and then get power and ground from an orange and black wires supplying the modual, I disconnect them from the modual before doing this, done it a few times. So from the modual it's the same two wires to the motor and the modual reverses the V & the Ground. I haven't mapped out the door harness so I can't say for sure what is between the mod. and motor.I disconnect it so that I don't burn the modual when I make it go up..I'm about to get a switch to hook up seperate but it would have to be dual pole, single throw that retains an off position, a tall order, or examine the harness and figure out why three different switches make it go down but not up. I'm going to compare the original harness and the newer one. Another option is to find a competent technician that will charge who knows what.No one said it would be easy, nor telling the neighbor he hasn't a clue. Thanks again for the help.

OK - This "solid state" pack as you put it IS IN QUESTION, IMO. I can't say what it was supposed to do but if the request doesn't pass thru that from at least the driver's door there's a reason I'm not familiar with.

Driver's controls do override individual controls, some continue UP with one push and so on. Which does what with what option package I couldn't know.

You may want to if nobody here can come up with how current should flow thru that in a diagram get one up to buying the subscription by like AllDataDIY.com for a year's worth it's about $27.50 I think now.

I wouldn't try to re-wire this on it's own if you can avoid that. This HAS to be smart enough NOT to have two people asking for opposite requests and not just be a dead short on vehicles with a master control and others at each door. That also about always means a lock out such that only driver can run the windows too.

Strong bet if that part it will be dealer only or used only by now? Can't say that for sure but could ask a dealer if it lists one and the cost if available at all.

Not real thrilled with stuff of the sort being in a door vs inside car or used if on a real wreck with no glass and exposed directly to the elements,

OK - Let us know how it turns out and what is found. I don't know how this place can give you even a ballpark price/cost to fix things they haven't checked out yet - especially A/C anything. That price sounds more like a diagnose what it needs not fixing anything and may not need much?

Door/window - hard to say. Looking back this door now doesn't have the lock cylinder of the original. That suggests it's from a different model year or package of options ?? You can tell I'm a it lost with you on that? I can't know what the original intended operating features were supposed to do vs what you have now? Might have to put whole wiring harness in from OE door then find out more about this ",module" and if it even matches at all. You are sending it out and wish them luck too as it doesn't seem like the correct door for the car at all,

Can do, if I could get a 72 duster I'd be happy,we inherited the buick, If I ever spend $10,000 on a vehicle it'll be a 74 grand prix that sat in grammas garage most of the time, they're out there,I'll be damned if I spend money on something that gets recalls, that would certainly aggrevate me

Re: 2002 buick pass. window Sign In

The shop found the A. C. condenser leaking like a sieve they said $550** installed I figured a 15 year old system might have one thing after another fail so we didn't have that done, when they checked the window they found a wire that the body shop had pinched with a bolt and it was grounding out when you put the window up , that toasted two modules but just for that function(window up) they charged $89** an hour, two hours, I wanted technicians and I got em, The module at the dealer is $400** plus, and they are scarce at salvage yards, one place said they had a few of calls for them lately so they get old and quit apparently, they had a 2000 century door out front and we checked that but it looked like that year was hard wired, but I could cob the switch in for the 2002 lesabre if it can handle the current, no luck finding them on line at dorman or j.c. whitney, fortunately on craigs list you can find someone parting out a lesabre accasionally and I've lucked out there if the guy calls back, so there you go. Thanks again

Re: 2002 buick pass. window Sign In

A/C - Your call and you called it. Condensers can be an annual job where I am on certain vehicles under types of use. New England and other places that will and do use sand on roads especially highways (traction for ice and snowy conditions) at speed that sand has its share of stones in it too and one whack thru grille condenser is toast. It does or doesn't mean you can't get years out of a new one or a day if something hits it just right it will put a hole in it. That price isn't expensive but you don't really know if system works if leaking that bad now can't really be sure it would work well or at all with just that fix.

Window specific part like for this exact set up. If you do cobble this do think it out well or have it thought out well. It reverses polarity to operate. It may also be designed to stop trying to move window either way when button is held and window is finished its travel - many don't and just keep power going as long as you hold a switch button which isn't too good for any type that do that. Not much different than holding a cig lighter in when it should pop out on purpose something is going to give or burn up and a shorted wire is doing or did that now found so I would hunt down the right part for that fix.

Ha - used stuff not acquired local to you AYOR if any good or not of course. If that common to blow it just unfortunate that it's the weak link not something less expensive but keep looking out there since it seems you've found the exact part to fix that. AYOR again if you alter it what it may do to master control for it?

It must be well thought out at the risk of blowing something else such that no windows work if messed up bad enough with something creative for a patch fix,
