2006 Escape gauges stopped working

2006 Ford Escape 3.0 L V6 148,000 miles Last week the car started bucking sometimes when accelerating at lower speeds and especially going uphill. My husband changed the fuel filter and it seemed to be better. We drove it for a couple days with no issues. It started doing it again over the weekend. It wasn’t as bad and only did it a few times but it was definitely happening again. Yesterday I was driving in town and suddenly all the gauges stopped. The windows and radio were also not working. It was like the car was off but it was still driving. I did notice that the daylights were still on. I drove it home like that and turned it off. I started it again and everything worked for a couple seconds before shutting off again (engine still running). Several hours later when my husband came home, he tried to start it and it just did the clicking noise like the battery is dead. We are assuming it’s an alternator problem. My biggest question is, could that have something to do with the bucking? Or are we probably looking at two separate issues?

I wouldn't assume that is an alternator. I doubt it would have restarted on it's own when you got home if that was the case. By all means have it tested anyway. You may need a professional shop to do a deep scan and see if there are any issues with these other modules. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

We had it tested and they said the alternator is the problem. It was reading high and jumping all over the place. I’m just worried that there’s another underlying problem besides the alternator. I was hoping that the alternator problem could also be causing the stumbling feeling while going uphill.

Have it scanned for any stored codes. That's about the only way to get a hint on what you are experiencing.

Is the check engine light on? If it is, as HT said, get the codes pulled and post the results here.

Then you just don't have enough information to determine anything yet. Just "bucking" doesn't tell us anything.

Well, that makes it at little tougher. If you can narrow down when it's doing it, that will be a big help. A quick check, if it's just doing it at higher speeds...45 mph & up. Try turning the overdrive off and see if that helps. But get the codes pulled anyway to see if there is anything there

My husband just took it to be scanned and the code says a misfire in cylinder 2.

A good place to start would be do all overdue maintenance and a tune up. There isn't much other than plugs for a basic tune up. The coil boots are replaceable and I would recommend replacing all the boots. So after doing the maintenance (filters, fluids, throttle body clean, etc), plugs & boots, I would suggest moving the #2 coil to a different cyl. This way if the miss comes back to the cyl you moved the bad coil to, you would know you have a defective coil. Or you could just replace 5 boots and the whole coil for #2, just costs a little bit more..

I would suggest changing the coil automatically. This vehicle has a known problem of burning out the coil drivers in the engine computer and a weak coil strains these drivers. A coil now could save a computer later.
