4runner problem Sign In

Hi;
My 1987 toyota 4runner is have an electrical problem. It starts when the fuse for the dash gadges blows, then the alternator no longer charges, then battery dies, and the car stops. I can't find any obvious signs of wires shorting, and the alt and battery are new(replaced by a "let's start throwing parts at the problem mechanic"). It throws no codes. Any ideas what's wrong? Thanks.

What else doesn't work when fuse blows other than the dash gauges? Obvoiusly something is shorted and was trying to think of the most likely thing. Is the fuse that blows between the bat and alt by any chance?

The only fuse I can find blown is the instrument fuse, which also runs the turn indicator lights.

I really don't know why this fuse is related to the alternator. By turn indicator lights do you mean that all directionals don't work? This whole thing might be a short in trailer lighting/wiring especially if not using a factory harness plug. These may have wiring waiting back there even if you don't have a trailer hitch. Just a wild shot at something. Good luck,

T
