66 Fairlain fuse panel replacement

Hi, first post here, I'm glad I found this forum. I just got a 66 Fairlane 500 4 door and noticed that the fuse panel clips are very rusty, so much that they loose connection and lights go out! I saw a new (fuse) style fuse panel at the local auto parts store , so I plan on swapping out the rusty one for the new one. Question, can someone tell me why there are 8 wires but only 5 fuses? I looked at the new one and it looks like there is 1 wire per fuse and 1 post for a ground. Would I be able to group the wires together that are currently going to the same fuse, but different ends? (e.g. the blue wire with the red stripe in the attached pic goes to the same fuse, one wire at each end, could they go to the same post on the fuse panel?). Sorry if this seems simple or obvious, I'm not very knowledgeable about wiring. You have to remember that a fuse is a break (protection) in the circuit; power is feed into a fuse, through the fuse and then on to whatever device. I’m surprised that you didn’t ask why there are only eight wires and five fuses (two wires) per fuse. You can see the black wire; its likely battery power (constant power) and it’s feeding two fuses. In the fist picture you can see the metal bridge between the two different fuses. The cigarette lighter, pink (red?) wire and the dome lights, the pair of green/yellow wires are being fed by the black wire. Why there are two green/yellow wires is that the circuit must slip and feeds more then one light bulb. They’re just using the fuse box as a splice location for that circuit. The same for the ignition “on” feed (can’t see the color of the wire; top right corner of first pic) it’s feeding the accessory and the heater fuses. The blue/pink(?) wires for the instrument cluster are the same color going in and out of the fuse because it’s a direct feed from the parking light switch. With your replacement fuse panel you’ll likely have to add your own splices (Jumper wires) to the two different power feeds because the replacement panel doesn’t have the bridges that jumper the different circuits like the original panel does. Awesome! Thanks Dan, that was very helpful. So, this would be what I'm going to do. The only one I'm not sure about is the Inst light one (blue/red-pink), if I need to hook up both or just one (either?). Each number would denote one post on the new panel. 1. Both (2) green/yellow (Dome) + jumper from black wire 2. Red (Cig Ltr) + jumper from black wire 3. Orange (Htr) + mystery wire (top right red dot in your pic) 4. Black/red (Accy) + mystery wire (top right red dot in your pic) 5. Both (2) Blue/pink (Ins Lt) Thanks again, Rob

That all should work for you; as for the inst lights connect a blue wire to either end of its own fuse. just like the way it was in the original panel. Da. Canadian "EH"

For some reason I can't get the inst lights working right by connecting to a fuse post. If I touch the wires together (without touching the fuse post) they work, but if I connect them both to the fuse panel post they are always lit. There is apparently (which makes sense) juice coming from the one direction so if I touch just that one to the fuse panel post they are always lit. I don't understand why they would work with the old fuse but not this, but I obviously have a complete lack of understanding with this stuff

With me not knowing what type of replacement fuse panel you have, I’m making the assumption that this panel doesn’t use circuit bridging, on some fuses? Turn the ignition on and then find a fuse that is dead (has no power). Connect the inst light wires to either (one wire at each end) end of this fuse. Turn your headlights/parking lights on; the inst lights should now come on. The reason I drew the schematic is that I’m worried that you’re attaching both blue wires or any two wire of a circuit; too one end of a fuse? The power has to go through a fuse. Dan. Canadian "EH"
