ok i got a 83 silverado with a 400 small block punched .30 over. me and a buddy changed the head gaskets and forgot to disconnect the battery and he touched something to something and smoke started rolling out the motor the dash the cd player then the ignition doesnt work we had to put in a push button start and you have to turn the key all the way and then push the button and let go as soon as it pops off or all the lights will get really bright like there about to exploed.the headlights and tail lights still work but the blinkers dont the brake lights dont. and when i try to start it it takes a while but when it goes it back fires really loud continuously and you have to stay on the gas to keep it idoling other wise it dies. i got the new distributer cap that made it run a little better.#1 so what could the back fireing be caused from? #2 what would the electrical problems be from? I also hade the altenater tested its good but even when its running the battery isnt getting charged and the battery is new. also when you give it gas it chugges and sputters but when you hook up the jumper cables up to it runs just fine. i dont get it!!!

Lights can get really bright! Try testing the alternator for excessive voltage output which could cause problems all over the thing, T
