87 CAMRY, ELECTRIC WINDOWS ARE INTERMITTENT Sign In

    My 87 toyota camry's electric windows are operating intermittently at best, and are getting worse! The driver's window works about 50%, the others have finally become useless. For a while, I could get the windows to operate by turning off the car, removing the key,opening the door, replacing the key, and turning the switch to "on"! The really weird part is that I met a guy who had the same make (87 camry stationwagon) and the same problem, and the SAME car off/door open fix!

I'm trying to decide how to begin to find the problem. My ideas so far: corroded contacts in the ignition switch; a bad relay switch, if there is one; something in the computer board; worn insulation causing a short somewhere, ...

Anybody have experience with this, or have other ideas?

If and only if the PW switches are on the driver's door I would suspect a fraying wire or broken where they have to bend in the door jam, T

I agree with Tom. If you can affect the condition by opening and closing the door, you more than likely have broken wires between the panel and door. There is a plastic, corrugated protector that goes between the door and panel. Inside the protector are all the wires. The insulation may be intact on the wires but inside the insulation the strands are broken. The best way to check is to hold the window button up or down as you bend and move the wires around individually. As you make and break the strands, the motor will turn on and off. When you repair the wires, solder them and put shrink wrap over them to make the repair weather resistant. Don't tape, wire nut, or use butt connectors, you won't be able to get them back in the protector.
