92 chevy electrical issues

1992 chevy c 1500 4.3 v6 engine starts right up and runs fine. turn on the lights, it quits. put it in reverse, it quits. step on the brake, it quits. i think its a bad ground or a short but need an idea where to start looking

What actually dies on the engine when you hit the brake? Does the fuel pump shut off and pressure drops out, do you loose spark or injector pulse? Knowing what system is involved may help tie those two things together, so you know where to look. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

i dont know what actually causes the engine to die. just know that you step on the brake, it stalls. put it in reverse, it stalls. turn on the headlights, it stalls. wont start back up until you shut off the lights or take foot off the brake or put it in park or nuetral. also has a miss when it goes into drive and going down the road. will sit and idle fine

Has there been any recent repairs done before this started happening? Any after market equipment or accessories other than factory? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

What is the voltage when this happens? Have you had the battery tested and are the battery connections absolutely perfect clean and shiny? Clean then spotless and hook a booster vehicle up and see if the same thing happens. If it doesn't you have a crap battery and likely cables. Every connection must be good including grounds not only at battery but engine and body.

There's something in the air going on at the site with all the whacked problems I was thinking battery or connections too but the starter is biggest load and would think it wouldn't crank at all. One that did wild funky things to me on a road call turned out to be the block on firewall with a bolt holding it (been ages but was a Chev van) just messed up sending power thru it. Fixed on site by just the slightest twist on spade terminals - all of them and everything funky stopped and worked fine after that? No clue how multiple things were going wrong and stumbled on that with minimal stuff with me. That one wasn't corroded and still had the factory white thick grease there intact but for some fool reason was the problem???? It worked???? Owner looking on thought I was a magician and no - that was dumb luck to find right away, Tom

Always good to see you JJ. Yes grounds galore and I didn't need to read the thread. Many - battery direct to body, another engine block to firewall, at tranmission body to dash metal and holy crap on my own car they put a ground strap on tailpipe to frame! No clue but they didn't waste a dime if it wasn't needed for some reason. Dan and I are in touch now and then and I should give him a shout or note. Great guy, T

Just go replace anything you can buy. - Dumb. This needs to have known grounds working and if you don't understand that send this problem out, T
