93 K 1500 ignition timing

93 K 1500 ignition timing

Trying to find the correct ignition timing (degrees BTDC) on my 1993 Chevy K1500 - 350 - V8 - 5.7 L .
All the info I have tells me "HOW" to set the timing, manual states to check "Emissions control info under the hood" and that doesn't say anything either. I have read post that vary from 0 degrees to 20 degrees. So is setting the timing kinda like a recipe where you "Season to your taste?"

If that decal is still there and legible it probably says this engine you don't set the timing. Not sure what year they fixed it such that the computer decided all of it once distributor was in place properly.
The days of fiddling with timing ended long before 1993,

It's not a "season to your taste" at all. The reason you can't find a spec is because there are so many different emissions packages that they all require different timing specs. That's why they tell you to read the label. It's the only place that it's specific to your vehicle.
It appears that your engine combination does have a spec though.
Here it is
Base Timing, with Manual and Automatic Transmissions: 0°(TDC)
Note: The Timing Connector breaks out of the engine wiring harness conduit adjacent to the distributer. It is a single wire sealed connector that has a tan with black stripe lead.

I unplugged the timing connector.....set the timing to 0 degrees.....tightened distributor & plugged the timing connector back in.....checked timing again & it was advanced by 20 degrees...does this sound about right?

If you plugged the timing connector back in that would be normal. the computer takes over. If it happened without plugging it back in, you may have a bad timing chain.
