I know the solenoid is bad but it is attached to the starter, and on the s10's everythings so tight. Does anyone have any tips or tricks to getting the assembly out?

You'll have to remove the whole starter. There is no way around it. I have never worked on an S10, so i cannot give you any tips. Ask, way2old or Tom Greenleaf directly in a PM. They might help.

Yup - some of these are tight. What is in the way of removing this starter? If the exhaust pipe needs moving get some PB (penetrating oil) on the connection at once. I would have to look right at this one to know just what I would move. Sometimes just a nudge on the engine or removing a motor mount would be needed. That won't help it the exhaust pipe is in the way as it would just move with the engine,
